This is a question that I hear very often in many CKM groups. There’s no right or wrong answer. At the end of the day, the choice will be yours, but I want to put my opinions here so you can make in informed choice, based on what yarn you want to use, your budget, what you want to make and other factors.
I have a number of machines, and I have used them all. I will give you my take on which of my machines I like the best…and worst!
First of all, you will need to know what machines are available. I will list here what machines I know:
Addi: they make 3 machines. 46 pin, 22 pin and the Egg, which I think is 6 pin
Sentro: they make 4 machines. 48 pin, 40 pin, 32 pin and 22 pin.
Jamit: They make 2 machines which are both 48 pin, one electric and one is manual
Prym: they make two machines, one has 44 pins and one has 20 pins
Knitting Circle: they make 2 machines, one has 40 pins and one has 22 pins
Of these machines, the ones brand I don’t have is the Prym.
In my opinion, the Addi machines are far superior to the others. They are very well made in Germany to high specifications .
Second to Addi, I would put the Jamit machine. They only make a 48 pin that I am aware of. They are also very well made and are a very sturdy machine.
I think that the Sentro machines are very popular. They have a lot of different size machines and are great if you are on a budget. In my collection I have the 48, 40, 32 and 22 machines. The larger machines have worked very well for me but the small 22 machines have given me some issues. The one that has rabbit ears really isn’t worth buying. Don’t waste your money. The little one that has four legs is better. I call it the spaceship as that’s what it looks like.. lol.. see the photos below. The 32 pin is hard to find so can be quite expensive compared to the other Sentro machines. Be careful and aware when buying Sentro machines though as there are some ‘knock off’ ones about, they look like Sentros but usually have a different name printed on them. These will work but probably not as well as genuine Sentros.
The Prym machines are reasonable priced too but I’m not sure how good they are as I don’t have one… yet… lol! Prym are an excellent knitting brand, their knitting products are great quality so I would think that the machines would be good quality too.
The Knitting Circle machines I would say are on the same par as Sentro machines. The 40 machine gives me no issues but the 22 is a bit clanky. They are reasonable priced and they are readily available to buy on line and in Matalan (in the UK)
My advice, for what it’s worth, is this:
If you can afford it, buy Addi. They will last longer and they are a far superior machine.
Sentro and Knitting Circle are great budget machines if you can’t afford the Addi.
If you can get a Jamit at a reasonable price, then I would go for it. They are nice and smooth machines.
Be very aware of the 22 Sentro machines as they are not good. That’s just my opinion but I have had four of them and none have been very good. The best 22 machine is the Addi, so if you can’t afford a big Addi, get the small one to go with whatever large machine you choose. It will be worth it in the long run.
Always look on Facebook Marketplace or Vinted and sites like that as there are many second hand machines available. People buy them and they can’t get the hang, so they want to sell them. I got my Addi 46 for £25 posted on Marketplace. I was very lucky! That’s less than you would pay for a new Sentro….so it’s worth it to keep looking.
Any questions please feel free to ask, and of course we call value everyone’s opinions on the machines. So please post your views too!!
