I've been seeing some beautiful Loop Shawls being made, but I've also realized there is something important I need to clarify about the sizing.
I originally designed this shawl to make and sell at craft shows, so the original pattern was sized approximately for a women's Large. That means the original measurements aren't necessarily going to give every one of us the fit we want.
The good news? It's very easy to check BEFORE you start knitting! 🙌
📏 Step 1: Check the Finished Measurement
Look at the pattern and find the finished length measurement for the yarn you've chosen.
Then grab a measuring tape and wrap that measurement around yourself the way the shawl will sit.
Don't skip this step!
It only takes a minute, and you'll immediately know whether the original pattern will fit you comfortably or whether you need to make yours longer.
🧶 Step 2: If You Need It Longer, Check Your Gauge
Don't simply add a random number of rows.
Make a gauge swatch with YOUR yarn on YOUR machine and determine how many rows you need to create the additional length.
Remember, even yarns labelled as the same weight can produce very different results—which is why the pattern includes different measurements depending on the yarn.
Once you know your gauge, you can adjust the number of rows in the tubes to create a shawl that fits you.
⚠️ One Important Recommendation
If you need additional room, I recommend making the tubes longer rather than making the centre loop larger.
That loop helps hold the shawl in place. Making it significantly larger may mean your finished shawl doesn't stay positioned as nicely when you're wearing it.
Keep the loop as written and adjust the tube length for your fit.
This is actually a great example of why I'm always talking about gauge! 📏🧶 Patterns give us a starting point, but understanding gauge gives you the ability to adjust a pattern to get the finished result you want.
And please keep sharing your Loop Shawls—I love seeing all the different yarns and colour combinations everyone is choosing! 💛
