What do I believe?
First, welcome new members! I’m glad you’re here. I thought the question above would be a good starting point, since I too am asked the question. And everyday, I ask it of myself: "Is this belief really true? And is it meaningful to me?"
In many traditions we have affirmations that shout out what we believe. In Catholicism, for instance, there is the Apostles' Creed ("I believe in one God, the Father..."), in the U.S., we have The Declaration of Independence--an affirmation of the natural rights of humanity and purpose of government.
But for those of us who were not the authors of these affirmations or declarations, do we ever stop and ask, "What do these words really mean?" And, “what do they mean to me?”
And, when we ask these questions, do we know where the answers come from?
From the head? The heart? The gut?
From Family? Or Culture? Religious institutions? Or Books?
What do we know as true and what do we repeat because this is what has always been required of us?
To know Christ/Christ Consciousness, as many of you seekers want to explore, we must first begin with our relationship to the word "belief."
And so I ask you: What happens in your body when you say, "I believe" ?
Examine just those two words, not what is or can be attached to them.
Sit with this.
Come to a supportive position, on the floor or a chair.
Place your hands on your thighs, palms down.
Breathe long and deeply, inviting the breath into the belly and the back body.
Breathe into the chest, the shoulders, the back of the neck, the face. The top of the head.
Gently release.
On your next round of breathing, mentally say: “I believe.”
Don’t add an ending. Just work with these two words: I. Believe.
I - BE-LIEVE.
BE-LIEVE.
Visualize the syllables floating through the body.
Where do they land? How do they land?
What frequencies or sensations do you notice?
Notice any emotions, colors, or images. But try not to get caught up in any story line.
Keep the attention on the body, on the words.
Let’s continue:
1. Place one hand on your forehead, another on the back of your head, as if you were cradling your crown.
Breathe into this space and say silently or aloud: “I believe.”
Do this 3 times.
2. Place both hands on your heart. Breathe and repeat the words:
I believe.
Again, do three rounds of breathing.
3. Place both hands around your belly. Breathe deeply into this space, deep into your pelvis bowl.
“I believe.”
Another 3 rounds of Long Deep Breathing.
4. Let yourself rest. Let the word “believe” flow where it needs to flow. Observe what happens.
Ask yourself: What am I feeling right now?
5. Set a timer for 5 minutes. Write without pause, without judgment, letting the words spill as a stream of consciousness.
When I breathe in the words “I believe,” I notice ____________________________.
When I breathe "I believe" into my head, I __________________.
When I breathe "I believe" into my heart, I __________________.
When I breathe "I believe" into my gut, I ____________________.
When you're finished, write down the page as fast as you can:
I believe________________.
I believe________________.
I believe________________.
Again, don't put too much thinking into this. We just want to see what arises.
When you're finished ask yourself: "What more does my body need to say?"
You may have different words in your language for believe, or belief. Take a look at the root of the word, at how belief is used in a sentence. What is your relationship to it?
What more do you need to explore?
Love,
Jackie
