My dog, Sadie-May is just a year old now. This is her first season. I've never trained a bird dog before but luckily I got a super smart one. The grouse have been sparse this year but for her sake ive been making a point to do a grouse day whenever I can. She has done 5 retrieves now. Today were two perfect ones. But the second one today was more than I could ever ask for. My first shot missed right by an inch and I didn't see exactly where it went but it buried in the spagnum. My second shot hit hard and took that bird off the stump. I turned around to get my dog who was still in the truck. And in that time the bird disappeared with my arrow in it. There was a pile of feathers and no bird anywhere. I felt so sick about it but I told my girl, go find that bird. She took off and went all over. Back and forth, in and out of the timber. I was worried it wouldn't happen. But then I heard her off to my right about 25 yards out and a grouse flap it's wings. I yelled bring it back, and out came my girl with a dead ruffle in her mouth, right to my hand. I was pumped. We took the picture and then I asked her to find the arrow, she led me back to another pile of feathers in the woods where my arrow was sitting, and then, I asked her to find the other one which I thought was a lost cause, but I showed her the general area, and she sniffed it out under the spagnum and dug it up for me. I feel blessed to have this friend. Best hunting buddy ever.
