Shooting
So as I have been shooting this year and switching to split finger and with glove I have kept popping arrow off shelf. So I switched to pulling with just 2 fingers and not using ring finger at all. Does anyone else shoot using 2 fingers?

As for the arrow coming off of the shelf… personally I found that if I am tense I tend to really “grab” the string, making the arrow pull off the shelf. My draw hand is tight and curling inward. Now, I shoot split finger, allowing the string into the first joint into the middle finger and if I allow my hand to relax and my fingers to extend without losing my hook at the end of my fingers, it creates a slight twist on the string and swings the arrow towards the shelf instead of away from it.

Also, keeping that elbow up keeps the hand and wrist aligned.

Got the poundage I was aiming for - 62# @ 28” and with a 320 spine arrow tuning in @ 690 grains. It’s the set up I wanted for elk hunting this year. I have a 58# bow that tunes a 400 spine arrow @ 589 grains. It will be a perfect deer bow. Both shoot nice and flat out to 35 yards. Now my time is being spent on dialing my shots in.

Crossbows & Archery Seasons
This is always the elephant in the room when it comes to archery seasons, and I’m gonna say right away that a lot of you followed me know that I’m not against crossbows per se, but I do not believe they belong in conventional archery seasons for the reasons I’ve listed below. I was asked to write a short treatise for a large organization on my opinion of crossbows why simply because I saw the creation of the laws in Ontario in the 70s for archery only seasons, and I saw those seasons created and allowed in the very beginning simply because of the constraints and the difficulty required, whether with a compound recurve or longbow to hunt effectively for any game you had to get close it wasn’t the weapons inefficiency. It was its range and its distance and the competency required to be effective with them! Read below and fill your comments in. Cheers! Grant In the mid 70s here in Ontario- my father and his associates of the then Ontario Bowhunters association finally convinced the province and the wildlife Enforcement Branch/management branch to look at archery only seasons, and there were some fairly strict parameters apart from the obvious poundage/ equip limitations. The argument that won the day was simply that archery seasons were longer because it was more difficult to hunt with the weapon (and be successful) what they called at the time primitive weapon seasons. This was entirely based on a very specific skill set in having to get close because of the weapons range and effectiveness, it was just more difficult. It was never meant to be the easy way or the sure way. The BowHunter needed to get close - much closer than other weapon systems to be effective. Of course the compound is started surfacing around that time, but of course the compound was a much more basic compound than the compounds-the wheel bows produced today let off speed - sights etc. etc. crossbows were somewhat prevalent but nowhere near as much as they are today.. the problem across the board we have in the hunting community now is that technology rules the day essentially based all around success, and of course, the profit margin of those companies pushing success..

This is a very interesting topic. It is also one of a lot of confusion here in Utah, where I live. The rules have gotten so complicated that the ones that made them up can’t answer simple questions that come up about them, like “what does any legal weapon include?” So, as far as choice of weapons and ethics, etc. it has evolved around time frames of seasons and scheduling set to prevent overlapping. They don’t want hunters in the field together using different hunting methods. So it becomes difficult to make divisions and keep season dates long enough to keep everything fair. My pet- peave is that here it gets hot! Archery season is mid August to mid September. You can’t move without sweating. They have an “ extended archery season” that goes to the end of November and several other “draw” hunts, but in areas that are usually private property or areas the animals migrate away from that time of year. I’ve wanted to approach the board about a season devoted to primitive bow hunters, so guys that have to get close to their prey can have a chance, preferably during the rut. Right now and how it has been, the rifle hunters get the prime areas and seasons! They actually have a rifle youth season just prior to archery season, and the animals are spooked before you even get there. The majority of archery hunters here ( about 98%) shoot compound. And, most practice at targets 70-100 yds. They hunt from ATV’s and are on every back road in the state. It is as crazy as the rifle season. So, my gripe is the ethics in all of this… Trad archery should be just that. That’s all I’m saying. Now I need to convince the board of that.
