Heavy FOC Arrows
Has anyone used the GrizzlyStik carbon arrows? I’ve used them for years and just this past year realized what a difference it makes to fine tune my arrows to my bows. I got a fantastic match for my 58# bow with a 400 spine getting 10.8 gpp. Now on the other hand, my 65 pounder is a no go for these arrows. I even cut the shelf out to be a center cut to make sure it wasn’t creating too much archers paradox, and what that did was improve the arrow to bullseye ratio, but it didn’t change anything for spine issues. The 320 spine was too weak and their 240 spine was way too stiff. The arrow weight was too light or too heavy, so I got a non-tapered shaft from the same manufacture that is a 300 spine and that should fix the problem. Now over the years I’ve collected a pile of 320 spine arrows that I am not shooting, so I’ll need to get a bow that these arrows will match. A guy needs about 10-15 bows at a variety of weights to be ready for anything! 😂

@Grant Richardson That’s what I wanted to hear! I have been on the fence about going back to woods. I haven’t shot them since the 70’s, as I let the marketing convince me otherwise. It is a commitment to go that route but I see that as rewarding as building my own bows. I’ll be looking for an education on the process.

Awesome!!! That is great to know Grant. Thanks! I haven’t been too worried about deer with my Carbons, but I did want something a bit heavier for elk and moose, but not so heavy that they drop super fast.
Warm Winter
It’s January and has been in the 50’s (F) breaking warm weather records here in Utah this year. Very unusual to be out shooting my bow in just a long sleeved shirt this time of year.

@Tom Horan It is one of the best ranges I’ve been to and I’m usually the only one shooting on it. Everyone is in the indoor range! And,…. it is very rare to see anyone shooting trad.

2026 Hunting Season
It is that time of year to start looking over statistics and picking hunting units for next season. We apply the end of March with 5 choices for the deer hunt, either for public land, limited entry, premium, or private property permits. Then the draw results come back around the end of May. The archery season starts mid August. So, scouting and preparing are difficult if you draw somewhere on the other side of the state. Or, if you have drawn a private property permit that doesn’t allow scouting…. Over the years I have gotten to know a lot of country and how the animals change their patterns with the encroachment of hunters. It has become an element of hunting that takes so much effort that it makes you wonder why you try to do it. But, I feel something in my soul when I hunt with a bow, and I’m not willing to give that up.

@Grant Richardson Yep, it makes you consider the expense of an Alaskan hunt 😆 We do have something pretty cool though. It’s called an “Extended Archery Season.” After the regular season if you haven’t filled your tag, you take an ethics course and there is an area that runs through a big part of the state that you can hunt any deer through the end of November. There are also areas for elk. A lot of it is on private property, and getting permission is a challenge. But, I do have a few places that I try to hunt within 30 miles or so.

@Kirk Russell that’s a lot of hunting!
So Damn True
I think a major part of performance in any thing or sport has to do with your physical & mental state of being. I think that's Grant 's idea here. Anyone want to add to this????

@Joe Daniels Thanks! I’m 68 and enjoying the action as much as I did when I was 25 😂

@Joe Daniels Absolutely. You have to be smart about your body. I was a bareback rider for nine years plus a list of crazy stuff too long to list. I’m lucky I can walk. Had rotator cuff surgery on both shoulders and a crushed disk in my back. Gradual rehab through correct exercise, and oddly enough, archery has been great for my shoulders. I wouldn't say that works for everybody, and I think a lot of injuries occur from going too heavy too fast, plus you have to build those muscles under your shoulder blades to support the tension on your shoulders. The bottom line, archery and hunting is a physical activity that requires being in shape for the demands it puts on your body. Be careful and smart, and have patience to build the strength and skill to become a good archer.

Have shot recurves and longbows off and on most of my life. Got the trad fever about 17 years ago and it just keeps getting better!
