Hi everyone so I have enjoyed Dungeons and Dragons since 3.0 when my dad bought me the box starter set for that edition. In high school I had a small group that we played usually once a week but it was more just a bunch of one shots and not a huge overarching campaign and I was the forever DM. College we tried another group but to many people wanted to play and it didn't go well. Since then I haven't really be able to play, however; I love making characters and wanted a place to put my ideas out there so maybe somebody can get inspiration from them or even use them if they wanted to so my many characters may find their own stories :).
I plan on posting my ideas here just to get them out into the world so hopefully people can enjoy them!
Character #1
Finn Teller, the Storyteller: Human: Wizard (Order of the Scribe) 6 / Bard (College of Whispers) 14
Backstory: Once upon a time in a small rural city, a nun opened the door to her orphanage and found a baby boy left on the doorstep.
The boy had dark brown hair and dark brown eyes. He was in a simple hand-woven basket with a modest blanket. Not one to leave the boy who had been clearly left for the orphanage to care for she brought the boy in.
As she got something for the boy to eat she found one more thing in the basket, a book of Fairy Tales with a simple message: "To my boy, Finn Teller, always love the stories"
There was no signature, all that could be said was the writer was most likely female.
With no way to find the boys family the orphanage too in young Finn as one of their own.
With the only memento of his family being a book of Fairy Tales, Finn learned to read as soon as he could. Finn spent most of his childhood reading stories of adventure, mystery, and even romance when he was older along with anything in between.
Eventually another girl joined the orphanage young than Finn. She loved stories just as much as Finn, so Finn took her under his wing. He became er storyteller, re-enacting the stories as he told them.
Eventually Finn developed magic through all the reading he was doing, this let him blend magic into his storytelling. It was during on of his performances that a member of the nearby magical academy discovered Finn. He offered the boy a scholarship to come study magic. Finn accepted and was enrolled.
Finn learned a lot at the academy. His magic took on literary aspects. He would spell out the word fire and it would become his firebolt spell. His shield spell took the form of a glyph. He mastered runes that he could use as part of his magic, his mage armor spell would be a set of magical runes across his skin.
During his years at the academy he continued to read stories of all kinds. But the other academy students never felt enamored by his storytelling and he missed that. So when he was finished with his early education he went out into the world to learn stories first hand.
He stopped by his orphanage and learned that the girl he adopted as his unofficial little sister had joined an adventurers guild. After thanking the nuns for everything they have done, he left the orphanage behind. Finn does send some money back to the orphanage every time he is able. This has led to the orphanage having one of the most extensive collections of children books, some written by Finn himself.
Finn's fist stop was to look in on his adopted sister. He found the guild and learned that she was part of a fairly successful adventuring party. He stayed with her for awhile then the road called to him so he set off.
Finn's goal was to see if he could find his parents. He still had the Fairy Tale book that was left with him, which despite being read numerous times, was in pristine condition. So with nothing but that Finn set out to find its origins.
During his travels he gathered more stories some first hand, others second or third hand. Finn also developed his performances in storytelling. This led him to study under a bard college for a little bit, imbuing more of his magic into his performance. Finn believes he will eventually be able to call on his magic to become aspects of characters in his stories.
Goals:
- Find origins of Fairy Tale book and his own origins (Parents/Family)
- Gathering more and more stories
- Become a master storyteller
Origins: Finn is my "DM" persona. His original idea was born in the superpower wiki page about literary magic. I loved the various "powers" that were located on that list and wanted a character that could use them. He started out as an idea for a fanfiction character using that magic the world of "Fairy Tail" as an older brother figure to the character Levy, a little of that is still in his backstory. He then evolved into a Dungeons and Dragons character. The Order of Scribes subclass seemed appropriate for a literature based magic user, not to mention I think he would keep track of the stories he gathered in the Awakened Spellbook that the class grants. Now why College of Whispers instead of College of Lore, because I wanted him to be able to call on a "bookmark" character and gain their abilities. This was one of the cooler abilities of the literary magic. Also I read the Manwa "Omniscient Reader" and thought the main character in that's use of that ability was cool. He became a DM persona when I thought of a campaign that would span many settings and when the players completed a "setting" they would have a boon for the next "setting."
So yea this is one of my many character ideas that I want to share. So you can let me know what you all think.
