Who Will Spend It?

Who will spend time with the people you love?
🌿 For years, I watched a neighbor water her grass and the beautiful plants around her home. Two elderly sisters lived there. One was the person I usually saw outside, tending those plants.
Whenever I could, I greeted her. Sometimes I stopped to talk while she watered.
Then she died.
A few weeks later, I saw a man watering the same plants. He looked as though he might be family. I don't know whether he was, or what care he had given her when I wasn't there.
But seeing him there made me stop.
What is somebody going to wait until you are dead to do?
Water your plants? Visit your house? Make time for the things you cared about?
And what are you waiting to do for someone who is still here?
The currency is time
⏳ This is a money devotion, but the question is not how much you can spend. It is where you are spending a currency you cannot get back: your time.
Earning money matters. Paying your bills matters. Caring for your responsibilities matters.
But is money, or the pursuit of it, keeping you from showing up for someone you love?
There may be a person who would welcome your company while they do an ordinary thing.
You could sit with them. Walk beside them. Listen. Help with something they care about.
You do not always have to bring money to bring yourself.
Show up while they are here
💬 Think of one person you love. Not a list. One person.
What matters to them? What do they spend time caring for? When did you last join them in it?
The plants still needed water after my neighbor was gone. But the person who had cared for them was no longer there to share that moment.
You do not have to wait for a funeral to make room for someone. They can't enjoy it then.
While they are alive, make a call. Arrange a visit. Ask whether they would like company.
Let the time you offer be time with them, not simply another task you complete for them.
✨ Prayer
Father, help me see the people I can make time for. Show me where the pursuit of money has crowded out my presence. Help me listen, be attentive, and show up for the people I love while they are here. Amen.
Scripture to select before publication.
✨ Reflection Questions
  • What is money, or the pursuit of it, keeping you from making time for?
  • What is one thing someone you love cares about that you could share with them this week?
