Choose Connection Over Embarrassment

The help I needed was available. I still had to be willing to receive it.
🦻 When I learned that my hearing loss was significant enough to require a hearing aid, I had more to work through than the cost.
I had to face the question I was asking myself: “Do I want to be someone who needs a hearing aid?”
I was in my thirties. That was not how I wanted to see myself, and it was not how I wanted other people to see me.
For a time, I tried to hide it. I spent unnecessary money covering up (more like trying to cover up) a need instead of being comfortable receiving help for it.
But pretending did not change the reality.
I was hearing impaired.
There were tools that could help me, and I needed them.
Provision I had to receive
👓 Glasses help people see. Hearing aids help people hear. Braille offers a way to read through touch. Mobility aids can help people move through the world.
These tools do not all work in the same way, and no one tool meets every person's needs. But when I look at the help available, I see reasons to thank God.
I can thank Him for the people who developed these tools. For the knowledge behind them. For practical assistance that makes connection possible.
In my own life, I also thank Him for the resources that have allowed me to pay for the help I need.
Sometimes the next step is not pretending you can manage without assistance.
It is sitting still long enough to ask God to show you what help is available and then being willing to receive it.
That was the part I had to work through.
Knowing I needed a hearing aid and accepting that I needed one were two different things.
My need is not my identity
💬 I coach. I talk. I show compassion with words, and especially by listening.
People often tell me that one of the things they appreciate about me is my ability to listen and be present with them.
What they do not always know is how much attention that requires, or how many tools help me do it each day.
The hearing aid is not the whole story of who I am. It is one of the tools that helps me communicate as well as I can.
I am not less present because I use assistance. I use assistance because being present matters to me.
I choose to wear my hearing aid every day.
I choose connection over embarrassment.
I choose to accept the tools God has made available rather than pretend I do not need them.
Receiving help can be part of stewardship
💰 Money has a part in this testimony because these tools cost money.
I can use resources to hide a need. Or I can use resources to address it.
Today, I choose to use money to pay for the tools that help me communicate with the world around me.
That is something I can thank God for. Not an appearance I have managed to maintain but help I have learned to receive.
If that help is beyond what you can currently afford, the need is still real. Needing assistance to obtain the tool is not something to be embarrassed about either.
My testimony is not that I no longer need help. It is that I have come to terms with receiving it.
✨ Prayer
Father, thank You for the practical tools and assistance that help me take part in daily life. Thank You for the knowledge, people, and resources You have used to help me. Please show me each day where embarrassment is making it difficult to receive support. Help me recognize what is available and take the next honest step toward accepting it. In Jesus name.
✨ Reflection Questions
  • What help have you been reluctant to receive because of what you think it says about you?
  • What practical tool or support can you thank God for today?
