A Quick Guide to the Community
🧭 A quick guide on how this space works and what it’s all about: 1️⃣ COMMUNITY FIRST This is a place to hang out, share ideas, ask questions, exchange feedback and grow together creatively. You can post: • practice clips • riffs & compositions • pedal setups • recordings & mixes • works in progress • songwriting ideas • ambient/shoegaze textures • questions, discoveries, experiments, frustrations, breakthroughs… all of it. You absolutely do NOT need to sound “perfect” to post here. Interacting with each other is a huge part of the experience, so feel free to comment, support others and start conversations. 2️⃣ COURSES & CREATIVE LEARNING The Classroom section is where the more structured creative learning happens. Rather than only focusing on “licks” or exercises, the idea is to explore: • creativity • improvisation • modes & harmony • tone building • ambient/shoegaze guitar • cinematic textures • recording & production • loop construction • sound design • songwriting approaches More lessons, breakdowns and creative explorations will keep growing over time. 3️⃣ LIVE EVENTS + OPTIONAL 1:1 SESSIONS Check the Calendar section for live sessions, discussions, creative hangouts and workshops. There will also be regular community sessions where we can: • talk gear • review tones • discuss music • share projects • improvise together • answer questions live And yes — for people still looking for more traditional one-to-one guidance, private sessions can still be arranged separately as well. Curious to hear what everyone’s working on 🎸

Welcome to Beyond The Fretboard
👋 Hi everyone, and welcome. I created Beyond The Fretboard as a space for curious guitarists and committed musicians who want to go further than simply memorising exercises and scales. This community is about learning how to create real music with the guitar. We’ll absolutely study the essentials: technique, scales, fretboard knowledge, harmony, rhythm, improvisation, ear training, production, and musical theory — but always through creative application and musical context. Instead of learning concepts in isolation for months before making music, we’ll often jump straight into creating with them. Maybe we learn a new mode… and immediately use it in a shoegaze jam. Maybe we study chord families… and instantly apply them to songwriting, atmosphere, or improvisation. The goal is not simply to collect information, but to turn knowledge into expression. Here you’ll find: - creative guitar practice - improvisation & musicality - songwriting & arrangement - recording & tone - production & workflow - harmony & fretboard understanding - artistic identity & modern musicianship Whether you’re building foundations or expanding creatively as a more advanced player, the aim is the same: to become a more expressive, creative, and complete musician. This community is for people who are curious, respectful, and genuinely interested in growing musically. Thoughtful discussion, experimentation, questions, progress sharing, and creative exploration are all encouraged here. The spirit of this space - a creative learning environment - a shared musical space for curious musicians - thoughtful discussion and experimentation - respectful interaction and mutual support - genuine musical growth over competition - creativity, expression, and long-term development Thanks for being here at the very beginning of this journey. — Nilo

🎉 Huge congratulations to Jens! 🎉
Jens has just achieved Grade 8. What an incredible milestone! 👏🎸 What makes this achievement so inspiring is that it isn’t just about guitar playing. It’s about commitment, patience, consistency and the willingness to keep learning and growing. Jens, you did the work. You showed up, practised, persevered and earned every bit of this success. I may have guided the journey, but you walked the path. Thank you for allowing me to be part of it, and thank you for inspiring me too. You’re a wonderful reminder that with dedication and curiosity, we can always continue learning, improving and enjoying music. Now it’s time to keep exploring, creating and making music. I can’t wait to hear what you come up with next, especially those original ideas using the Lydian mode! 😎🔥 Congratulations again, Jens! Keep rocking!

🎸🧴 A Clean Guitar Sounds Better
Yesterday, one of my students asked me about guitar cleaning products and I realised this is something we don’t talk about enough. Thanks to Matt for bringing up the topic! Keeping your guitar clean isn’t just about appearance. It affects the sound too. Especially during these hot summer days, sweat can build up quickly on the instrument. Over time, this can dull the strings, make the guitar feel less comfortable to play, and in some cases even affect the finish of the instrument. Have you ever changed your strings and immediately felt that your guitar sounded more alive, brighter, and more responsive? Well, you don’t always need to replace them straight away. Regular cleaning can dramatically extend the life of your strings and help preserve that fresh, lively sound. If I had to recommend just three essential maintenance products for every guitarist, they would be: 🎸 1. String Cleaner (the most important one!) This is probably the product I use the most. Giving your strings a quick clean every now and then helps them last longer, feel smoother, and retain their tone for much longer. 🎸 2. Guitar Polish Perfect for finished surfaces such as the body, neck, and headstock. It keeps the instrument looking great and helps remove sweat and fingerprints. 🎸 3. Fretboard Conditioner For unfinished wood fretboards such as rosewood or ebony. Conditioning the fretboard occasionally prevents it from drying out and keeps it feeling smooth under your fingers. I know that in reality we don’t always have time for a proper 5-minute cleaning session after playing. Life happens! My suggestion is to always keep at least a dry cloth in your guitar case. Even without any products, a quick wipe can make a big difference. And if you’re only going to clean one thing, make it the strings. Try to pass the cloth underneath them as well, as that’s where most of the sweat and dirt tend to accumulate. Even a quick maintenance session from time to time can easily add extra life to your strings and keep your instrument feeling and sounding its best.
