So I was listening to some Freddie King this morning on the way to work and one of my favourite songs came on - Woman Across The River.
I've always been drawn to Freddie's funky style and I definitely recommend checking him out if you're not familiar.
But then I got curious about some cover versions.
Matt Schofield's version was one of the first I heard of this song and his playing is awesome. I was fortunate enough to attend a masterclass he held at my University when I was a kid, and getting to see him play live that same evening was incredible.
This took me on a bit of a rabbit hole, and I've discovered the Allman Brothers Band have a version of the same song too, with Warren Haynes & Derek Trucks on guitar.
The song is also clever in how it transitions from a straight funky blues to a slower shuffle. Clever how it transitions too.
I've posted the versions below for those who care to listen. Do you have a preference?
Sometimes I hear from students about how they prefer more modern covers of older songs because of the recording quality. Does that resonate with you?
