Progress NOT Perfection.
I have been in recovery most of my adult life. Alcohol was my demon; but it wasn’t the only thing I used to change how I felt. Happy, sad, angry, lonely and tired, alcohol was my solution (anything BUT self-exploration, hard work and sacrifice). Traditionally, sobriety is the 12 steps, after long stints in corporate-driven rehab centers that mean well, and often have wonderful results. If you have spent any time in sobriety, trying to achieve sobriety, or even trying to discover what that means for YOU, there is no one size fits all solution. Period. AA and 12 steps did work for me, for a very long time. However, having now worked in this industry, on top of the 16 years since I last took a sip of alcohol; I started asking myself some difficult questions. Questions like: If all those “traditional programs” were the absolute solution to all that ails we addicts/alcoholics; why does AA (for example), only have a 10% success rate? Why is the revolving door at rehab facilities often revisited over and over without long-term “sobriety”? I am an “AA”, (still proud); but have enough experience, both personally and professionally, that I now realize there are so many ways to do “this thing” I became open to all roads that lead to Real Recovery (my alternative words to describe traditional “sobriety”). So, that’s all I want to here. Educate, advise, guide, explore and learn about all the different ways, methods, treatments; but mostly solutions people have found to get to their own Real Recovery. Begin again with me. The only thing I now know to be true, and how I have lived my life over the last 16 years; it’s not about perfection, progress moves us down the road to real change. It’s not a quick fix, and it certainly takes time. I am better for it, and I think my family would also agree. When the chips fall, those who love us, just want to see us better, even if it’s just better today. We don’t have anything else but that. The past is history, the future is a mystery, TODAY is a gift; that is why, they call it the present.

Troublesome
I’ve started getting a little troubled by posts I’ve seen on FB. Asking for help from the abyss of strangers on the World Wide Web for help. While I stand by my credentials as a Recovery Coach, RSS and Counselor (intern), I certainly am not a doctor. I never want to misrepresent myself. If you are having a medical crisis of any kind, please seek professional help immediately. It’s awful to watch people suffer, it’s incumbent on us to want to help. I try to always stay in my lane of helping others seek and find sobriety. That’s where I shine. We are all here with different gifts. It takes a team of people often to treat one individual. I know my abilities; but I recognize my limits as well. I am not a doctor, and neither are these pseudo “experts” giving advice to some very fragile people. We have to keep our egos in check, stay in our professional lanes and work together to find real help for folks 🙏

Thought for today.
If there is something I am doing; that merits change (thereby affecting my mental health), it should go on my to do list. I can’t change anything or anyone else, but self-improvement is possible!

Thought for today.
Teaching people sobriety.
I would love to do this; but often times, it becomes a teaching moment for me. We are all so different; a one size fits all approach just isn’t reasonable. Emulation, is one way to teach. Anything I can say or do to help a fellow addict/alcoholic; let’s go!!!!

Food for thought
You can always replace “alcohol”. Anything that takes you further from where you want to be in life. A lot of normal drinkers out there. I was not one of them. 👍
