AI Crushes IOI
OpenAI just took home gold in one of the world’s top programming competitions... and did it without the internet. 🤯
Their reasoning system competed in the 2025 International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI) and ranked higher than all but 5 of the 330 human participants, placing first among all AI entries. And yep, it had no special treatment: just a terminal, 5 hours, and 50 submissions like everyone else.
This is a massive leap forward for general-purpose AI reasoning. In just a year, OpenAI’s approach jumped from 49th to 98th percentile in competitive programming, without custom training for the task. That’s a huge signal about where automation and AI-assisted problem solving are headed.
👉 OpenAI's approach focused less on fine-tuned models and more on orchestration, using ensemble methods and smart scaffolding to pick the best submissions. It’s a reminder that how we structure AI workflows can matter as much as (or more than) the model itself.
