Assignment #1
404 Shay is an independent experimental artist, singer-songwriter, and producer based in Toronto, Ontario. Her artistic world is rooted in her deep-seated childhood traumas. She turns to music to process, understand, and transmute pain that once touched every part of her into something honest and deeply human, with the hope of sharing that transformation with others who have experienced similar hardships. Her sound blends experimental and alternative music with ambient pop and alternative hip hop. It is uniquely soulful while still being heavily processed, using shifts in pitch, ghostly adlibs, and layered vocal melodies to create immersive soundscapes that reflect her journey through transformation.
Assignment #2
LITTLE GIRL is a single from an upcoming EP that explores the idea that safety is created by no longer needing to hide who you are. At the heart of this concept, LITTLE GIRL traces the roots of pain that continue to shape 404 Shay's creative world. While she records independently in her home studio, collaboration has become central to her process. The song began as an a cappella before evolving through a back-and-forth collaboration with producer SPYDERSOUND, with each layer, harmony, and production choice shaping the final recording. Rather than following a traditional songwriting process, the song developed organically through each exchange, allowing the production and vocal arrangements to respond to one another. Drawing from experimental music, ambient pop, and alternative hip hop, LITTLE GIRL is built around atmospheric synthesizers, spacious production, and layered textures to create an immersive sonic experience. The spacious arrangement allows the emotional weight of the lyrics to remain at the forefront while the evolving production reflects the song's themes of vulnerability, memory, and transformation.
Assignment #3
I created LITTLE GIRL as an outpouring of emotions bottled up for years; a means of catharsis, healing, and transmutation. This song delves into the state of mind and feelings that arose from the difficult moments of my early life, memories that shaped a decades-long journey of facing, accepting, and integrating deep-seated traumas. I have always found solace in music that feels close to home and is willing to sit with pain rather than turn away from it. I wanted to create something that offered that familiar solace. My hope is that LITTLE GIRL, and the larger project it belongs to, can help listeners walking through life carrying heavy burdens from childhood through their own healing. To me, this song is transmutation in motion, it is the essence of some of the hardest moments I have ever experienced in life turned into a full bodied and atmospheric piece of art.
Assignment #4
An atmospheric, experimental single exploring childhood trauma, healing, and emotional transmutation through vulnerable songwriting and immersive production.
