Assignment 2 — About the Project
"I Wanna Know Your Name" is a retro-inspired funk single by Karma's Tea. Built around an infectious groove that began with a bass line and rhythm conceived by Mike Desroches, the song explores the excitement of meeting someone for the first time through themes of attraction, confidence, and empowerment in making the first move toward a genuine connection. The lyrics unfold naturally over the groove, allowing the rhythm, melody, and vocals to tell the story. Drawing inspiration from Prince, Chic, and Silk Sonic, the recording blends soulful vocals, live instrumentation, and a groove that feels both effortless and inviting. The song was produced and recorded in Karma's Tea's recording studio, where Mystina Sol improvised the vocal melody in a single pass before refining the lyrics and arrangement. To capture the right feel, musicians from around the world contributed performances as the arrangement evolved before the final recording was completed. The finished recording features bass by Alex "Spanador" Moseley of Cult Jam, whose performance completed the groove that became the foundation of the song. @Tiffany Gaines
Assignment 3 — Why This Project Matters
"I Wanna Know Your Name" was created from a desire to write something simple, honest, and connected. We wanted to capture the excitement of an instant connection through a groove that felt natural, allowing the music and lyrics to unfold together without overcomplicating the moment. Much of the song developed organically, with the melody and many of the lyrics emerging through improvisation, reinforcing the spontaneous feeling at the heart of the recording. More than anything, we wanted to create a song that feels good, one that captures the excitement of meeting someone new and reminds listeners to trust the connections that feel genuine, wherever those connections may lead. If the song leaves someone smiling and remembering the excitement of a first connection, then it has done exactly what we hoped it would do. @Tiffany Gaines
Assignment 1 — Artist Biography
Karma's Tea is a retro-inspired R&B, soul, and funk duo from Long Island, New York, founded by keyboardist, composer, and producer Mike Desroches and singer-songwriter Mystina Sol. After meeting while performing through the same music agency, they became longtime friends before eventually working together at Mike's music school, which they now own and operate together. As their relationship grew, they began writing songs while living the very experiences that inspired them, turning deeply personal moments into honest, heartfelt music. Inspired by their own journey, they create soulful music under the banner of Love Without Permission, exploring the courage to choose relationships that feel genuine, even when the world doesn't understand them. During the COVID-19 pandemic, they transformed years of songwriting into the Karma's Tea project. Their debut single, "What Do You Do," earned a place on Amazon's Worldwide Jazz chart, and after spending years with an independent label, they chose to continue their journey independently, remaining true to the vision behind their music. @Tiffany Gaines
