Welcome to our Sailing Community
Welcome aboard. This community is for aspiring sailors who are ready to build confidence, improve their skills, and learn the racing side of sailing. Whether you’re new to sailing, curious about racing, or ready to become a stronger crew member, this is a place to learn, ask questions, and grow without feeling like you should already know everything. I’m Doug, with over 40 years of experience in cruising and racing. I’ve helped crew members build confidence, improve their skills, and even go on to skipper their own boats. Inside, you’ll learn how to become the kind of crew member skippers trust and enjoy having onboard. You’ll find: ⛵ Sailing basics explained clearly ⛵ Racing skills for beginners ⛵ Crew skills that build confidence ⛵ Real experiences from other sailors ⛵ A safe place to ask questions This community is for sailors who want to improve, understand racing, and become more capable on the water.

Collectable playing cards
Ever thought about generating collectable playing cards for your passion. Here is one I made for fun. Let me know if you would like to try it out. Simple AI prompt to use Chat GPT Go to ChatGPT. Upload a photo of yourself. Then paste this prompt 👇🏻 "Turn me into a collectible trading card. My name is [your name]. I'm [one sentence on what you do]. Give me 4 stats out of 10 — things like Consistency, Coffee Dependency, Idea Overload, or create your own. Add a rarity level (Common, Rare, Ultra Rare), a card number, and a one-line bio at the bottom. Make it look like a real collectible card." Notice how specific that is. That specificity is the whole lesson. The detail you put in directly determines what you get back. Most people skip the detail and wonder why AI keeps missing the mark. Drop your card in the comments. I want to see everyone's rarity levels. Add yours in for fun.

Safety is whose responsibility?
Knowing your crew's limits before the weather turns is one of the smartest things a skipper can do. A prepared boat and a capable crew are your best safety net out there. When in doubt, stay in port — the sea will always be there tomorrow.

Storm clouds and wind.
Was out on the boat preparing for our weekly race. The weather was deteriorating around us. Winds buffeted the marina up to 30 kn. gusts. Do we stay at the dock or prepare for high wind race. Here on our lake the weather usually passes quickly. The race committee decided to continue as the winds abated. The race started after a no wind delay. Go figure, feast or famine. Great time for us as we finished first and some of the fleet lost their wind. Life as a sailor on a lake.
