Claude Code Skills, Sub-Agents, MCP
Many are wondering what is the difference between these three. I highly encourage you to play around with all of them, it will supercharge your workflow.
What skills, sub agents and MCP are you using for your marketing workflows ?
Most people mix up skills, subagents, and MCPs, so here’s a clean way to think about them.
Skills
Skills are written instructions that tell the LLM exactly how to complete a task.
Examples:
  • “Analyze spreadsheets using this method”
  • “Write emails in this specific voice”
They’re reusable and help you get consistent output every time.
Subagents
Subagents are additional instances of the LLM, each assigned a specific role.
For example:
  • One reviews code
  • One writes tests
  • One updates documentation
Work can happen in parallel, and each agent stays focused on its own lane.
MCPs
MCPs are the standard way to connect the LLM to external tools.
Examples:
  • Updating Linear tickets
  • Querying a database
  • Calling internal services
If the LLM can reach a tool or system, MCP is often the connector that makes it possible.
The simplest mental model
  • Skills: how to do something
  • Subagents: who does what, in parallel
  • MCPs: what tools you can access
Experiment with all three.
