UPDATE on Fable 5: still down, and now it's a negotiation
UPDATE on the Fable 5 situation, because a few things have moved since the weekend.
Four days in now, here is where we actually stand.
Still dark. Fable 5 and Mythos 5 are not back, there is no announced return date, and Anthropic is routing everyone to Opus 4.8 in the meantime.
The posture has shifted from "shutdown" to "standoff." Anthropic flew senior execs to D.C., their technical staff have been meeting with the White House, and both sides reportedly want this resolved. The expected path looks like this: Anthropic patches the jailbreak, Commerce confirms the fix, the directive lifts. The White House, via AI adviser David Sacks, is framing it as "they refused to patch it, so the ball is in Anthropic's court."
Here's the wrinkle that got more concrete this week. The jailbreak isn't hypothetical anymore. A well-known jailbreaker (Pliny) publicly "liberated" Fable, and the system prompt ended up online. Anthropic still says it "isn't serious" and that the model wasn't blown wide open, which is a fair point, but it's harder to wave off now that it's out in the open. That tension is probably the whole holdup.
And the subplot still stands: reporting says a competitor, Amazon, took the jailbreak report to the White House in the first place. Layer on the fact that Anthropic is already suing the administration over a separate "supply chain risk" label, and you can see why a "just patch a bug" situation has dragged on for four days.
My honest read hasn't changed much: it comes back, but slower than the friendly-meeting headlines suggest, and probably with strings, either verification or a patched-and-certified version.
Where do you land now that the jailbreak is public and this is clearly a negotiation? Is "patch it and it's restored" the real story, or the polite cover for a bigger fight?
