When technology reaches its limits, what is your first instinct?
- Buy a bigger server?
- Add memory?
- Move the work to the cloud?
Sometimes that is exactly the right answer. But sometimes the technology is a constraint—and so is the project’s pocketbook!
Years ago, I faced a problem that appeared to require a larger computer. But we didn't have project funds for a larger computer. So instead, I redesigned the workflow so the existing machine could finish the job reliably.
That experience still shapes how I approach architecture and operational design: Before replacing the technology, ask whether the process should change.
