I know many of us have been getting one-off projects but struggling to turn them into recurring clients. I worked through this recently and here’s a simple system that works for me:
- Deliver the project on time and make sure it actually solves their problem.
- Before handing it over, add a note: “This will need updates/monitoring every month.”
- Package that as a recurring service (something like $200 to 500/month).
- Show them how much time/money they’ll save by not managing it themselves.
- If they say no, still ask: “Can I check in with you in a month to make sure everything’s running smoothly?”
- Use that check-in to offer the recurring service again.
This is the cleanest way I’ve found to shift from one-and-done projects into monthly retainers. Let me know if this was valuable to you or if something doesn't make sense 🙏
