This update is real and changes the default for GitHub Copilot Free, Pro, and Pro+ accounts starting on April 24, 2026: GitHub may use your interactions with GitHub features and services — including inputs, outputs, code snippets, and associated context — to train and improve AI models, unless you turn this off in your personal Copilot settings. GitHub also states that data from Copilot Business and Enterprise customers is not used to train models.
The most important point is this:
- If you use Free / Pro / Pro+: it is worth reviewing this setting.
- If you use Business / Enterprise through your company: this change does not apply in the same way, because GitHub says that data from those plans is not used for model training.
To disable it, the official path is:
- Open GitHub.
- Click your profile picture.
- Go to Copilot settings.
- Look for “Allow GitHub to use my data for AI model training.”
- Change it to Disabled.
