At What Point Does AI Stop Being a Tool and Start Being Infrastructure?
Early AI systems are optional. Mature ones are not. Over time, AI moves from experimentation to dependency, from feature to backbone. Yet most AI Audits continue to treat these systems as isolated tools rather than operational infrastructure.
This is a critical blind spot. Infrastructure failure is not about wrong answers, but about systemic paralysis. When AI systems slow down, drift, or behave unexpectedly, entire workflows stall, even if accuracy metrics still look acceptable.
AI Audit must evolve once AI becomes infrastructure. The focus shifts from model performance to resilience, fallback paths, and recovery time. The real question is no longer “Is the model correct?” but “Can the organization still function when it isn’t?”
If your audit cannot answer that question, you are auditing a tool that no longer exists.
