A 5-Minute Rule for Beating Procrastination???
Starting tasks (especially one that isn't super fun) is a struggle for me, and as a business owner, that can put a real downer on growth and making progress. Like many of us I've tried a whole bunch of stuff to try to force myself into a task with little success. However, this 5-minute rule is something that has actually worked for me.. Well, 60 percent of the time, it works every time (congratulations if you got the reference there). The 5-Minute Rule involves telling yourself you’ll only work on something for 5 minutes. If after 5 minutes you’re still not feeling it, you can stop guilt-free and reschedule it for later in the day or week. Most of the time, though, you’ll get lost in an ADHD focus bout and actually get stuff done. 🔄 Actionable Step: First of all, when just getting started with new tools I find sometimes I forget to use them. Solution? Something to throw it in my face to use. I'm lucky enough to have a big glass whiteboard in my office, so writing on that really helps me. But, if you're on a budget or just don't vibe with a whiteboard, try a sticky on your desk or monitor and write something like "just try for 5 mins" or something that will either motivate you or pull on your heartstrings to give it a shot. Pick a task you’ve been procrastinating on and try the 5-Minute Rule today. Set a stopwatch (not a count down) for 5 minutes face down and dive in. That part is important, we don't want an alarm breaking our focus if we do get into it. 💡 Why this works: After a little looking on the interwebs the 5-Minute Rule works because it bypasses the anxiety associated with starting a task, which is a common struggle for people with ADHD. Once started, it becomes easier to keep going due to hyperfocus tendencies. This hack reduces the overwhelm, which is a major barrier for those of us with ADHD.
