“Balkanization”

Here is a video of me playing a song with ornaments I’ve learned mainly from Serbian kolos. Maybe you recognize it, but I first heard this as lambada, then llorando de fue, then dance the night away ~ it is a great melody, and I had fun experimenting with it .

“Balkanization” is a term I would prefer not to use; it is far too much of a generalization, thus I would argue it encourages a misunderstanding of diverse cultures and musical styles spread across many many peoples. Perhaps this isnt the place to discuss, but because we are in a class setting, I think it is worth noting.
