The Layer Most AI Builders Forget
Everyone here is building smart things. AI tools. Automations. Workflows. But here’s the real question: If someone wanted to pay you today… could they? Not “soon. Not when I launch. Today. There are 3 layers to building: 1. Creation – You build the tool. 2. Distribution – You share it. 3. Infrastructure – You install the buying path. Most people focus on the first two. The third is what turns projects into income. Simple test: If 100 people discovered your AI project this week: - What do they buy first? - What do they buy next? - Is there a structured checkout? - Is there an upgrade path? Or is monetization still “later”? AI gives leverage on building. Infrastructure gives leverage on earning. Wondering, which layer are you building right now?

What do they buy first? A single workflow audit — I look at what they're doing manually and map out what can be automated. Low commitment, high value for both sides. What do they buy next? The build itself. Usually an n8n automation based on what the audit surfaces. Average project is 3-6 weeks depending on complexity. Structured checkout? Now yes. Didn't always. I used to do the "let me send you a custom proposal" dance every single time — massive time killer. Now it's a fixed-price audit with a clear deliverable, and the build quote comes out of that naturally. Upgrade path? Maintenance + expansion. Once a system's live, clients always find more things they want automated. My best client started with one onboarding workflow and ended up with a 70-step system touching their entire operation. Took me way too long to get this dialed in. Was so focused on making the automations better that I neglected the actual buying experience. The irony of an automation guy having a completely manual sales process wasn't lost on me.
