Competition and Starting MY Own Business.
How does everyone deal with competition? Im in Medford Oregon and I want to start a window washing business eventually adding in gutter cleaning and pressure washing but in my area there are 13 other services that are preforming the same treatment and I don’t know how to stand out from the rest. I am currently a cement mixer truck driver so it’s a huge leap in a different direction. Do I quit my day job and put all my time in this? I have a 10,000 dollar start up and want to know what everyone’s thoughts and experiences are so I don’t fail or do something stupid.

@Benjamin Millen Thanks Ben. It's certainly not an orthodox mindset though when explained, it makes a lot more sense. Certainly more than operating amongst each other with suspicion, envy and a mentality of scarcity.

Nailed it mate. When I had the idea for this I messaged a lad I've known a long time who is one of the renowned window cleaners in my area, seen again recently, not quite friends but a warm relationship and catch up for a beer every so often. Anyway I essentially stated this to him, he said he might have a $6k job soon he can't do on his own and would split it. That one didn't eventuate but a week ago he got me onboard to help him with a massive house and I have a few in the pipeline I'll need a hand on. Always seek the win/win.
This Is What I Can Offer Y'all
Hi all, I joined last night and have already learned a lot and had many thought prompts. As someone just five months in to my business journey, I don't foresee that I'll have much if anything to teach a majority of you on the technical side of window, gutter and pressure cleaning. There's a whole trove of collective knowledge held in here that would be of huge benefit to me and I will be certainly posting my share of questions and requests for advice. I don't want to be a leach though! So, these are the things I have a background and experience in that perhaps you have some gaps in with your business that I can help with; - Business Development: getting new customers - How to make effective cold calls that generate revenue (mindset, who to call, what to say, what you want from the call) - Account Management: managing existing customers - Marketing - LinkedIN: I'm not personally a huge fan of social media, particularly this platform however, it is a necessary evil in business and especially in the phase I'm in. LinkedIN has been invaluable to me for the last 16 years for new business prospecting in the B2B sector The skillsets above were earned starting from age 21 (37 now) in selling Technical IT Education and IT Managed Services and consulting in ISR, business development, account management and marketing roles. I've had my share of other physical roles too like bricklayers labourer, saw milling and factory work. For the 4.5 years leading up to kicking this business off last November, I was a small business banker with one of the 4 major banks here in Australia, promoted at that bank and then poached by a recruiter to another bank (the 5th largest) in the next tier up from where I was at and was a relationship banker specialising in Agribusiness. I excelled in banking and learned a lot- I don't have a university degree or any formal qualifications either. With that experience I can also assist with; - Analysing, Interpreting & Using Financial Data - Revenue/Cashflow Forecasting - Basic Accounting - General Financial Queries

There's two type of people out here, those who ride kangaroos and those who get ridden by Kangaroos! It is an eclectic resume for sure but I've learned something from every single job I've had that I still use today. It's a great community you are building here man, particularly for the likes of me in a new industry essentially teaching myself and s I say in the post, I also want to be able to help others how I can.

Let’s make this a group worth being in.

@Darius Irani Hey Darius- thanks man great to be here and hope you’re well. I do indeed have a plan, the near 10k word business plan I wrote back in November is basically on track and this is the start of the ramping up phase which is mad exciting to me as even here in regional Australia, the potential is endless.

@Benjamin Millen thanks Ben and thanks for having me here. The new YT video is great too! I was fortunate enough a few times in my 5 months to be booked for 2-3 weeks and I also didn't leave enough margin. Well....being a newbie these jobs all took me longer than anticipated of course and I learned my lesson. Any week now I have a reasonably large job on I will keep the Friday free and schedule it to begin on the Wednesday if I estimate two days to complete. If finished on time then that's great, I have time to work on the business not in it or just take a break and reflect.
