🎥Your mix might be killing your sync chances.
Found a YouTube channel that's genuinely useful for sync work: Film and TV Without Music. The concept is simple - film and TV clips with the music stripped out. No score, no underscore, just the scene. Why does that matter? Because one of the hardest things to train your ear for is where your music needs to sit so it's not fighting dialogue. You can't hear that problem until you're actually placing tracks underneath real scenes with real speech frequencies. The workflow I mentioned to @David Goode : pull a clip from a show that fits the mood of your cue, drop your track underneath it, and listen for where the frequencies compete. Mid-range is where dialogue lives. That's where most sync rejections are hiding, and most composers never find it until a supervisor tells them. This channel also gives you raw material to score to picture, which is one of the fastest ways to understand how editors actually use music - and what makes a cue work or fall apart in context. Link in the comments. Go mess around with it. https://www.youtube.com/@FilmandTVWithoutMusic-um9wd

Sharing New Track "Carnival Crown"
Hey SV fam - Just sharing some new work with you all. I welcome any feedback you'd like to give, but ultimately just want to contribute to our community and highlight some of the sounds and writing inspirations I'm feeling these days. This track originated from a short sample I snagged from a different song of mine, one I wrote in 2024. I took a passage I really liked from the end of that song and sped it up about 10BPM and then wrote a whole new piece around the sample. I had so much fun with this one and definitely recommend trying this kind of thing as a production exercise. The original song was titled "Is That Betsy?" Fun fact: The title of the original song came from a circus I went to when I was a kid, and my Aunt Betsy was one of the professional dancers in it. She wore a really sparkly costume and a huge headdress, and I barely watched the rest of the show, because every time I saw one of the lady circus dancers, I yelled out, "Is that Betsy!!?" I named this newer 'remake' "Carnival Crown" as a nod to the original title. Apparently, that's one of the official terms they used for that type of headdress. https://s.disco.ac/yaevhyhxltwx

Woke up this morning to a Pond5 approval. Yayyy!! It was my 3rd submission. Now I have to keep them coming and submit to other sites. I plan on adding a 60 and 30 second version as well. (this was the track I shared with you all yesterday) https://s.disco.ac/cekawidrjmjq

@Joe Goldberger Thanks very much. Well my DAW is Reason so it’s a mix of Reason and Slate effects. Sometimes for mastering I use Landr if I don’t feel like doing it myself. Just for a lil boost and shine.

One hour. Your questions, my answers. No agenda, no slides, no sales pitch. Just whatever you've been sitting on and haven't had a chance to ask. Bring your real questions. The ones about pitching, catalog strategy, supervisor relationships, metadata, one-stops, libraries, briefs - whatever's been living in your head rent-free. The only way this is worth your hour is if you come ready to ask something specific. Drop your questions below so I can prep, or just show up Monday and fire away live. Link on the Calendar to join. See you there.

Awesome. Here's my question. What should be my focus as a musician new to music licensing? Music Libraries or should I start trying to connect with sync producers/agents. The second part gives me anxiety. 😏

@Glenn Macrae Yes I plan on being there

Pick Your One! Look at your catalog right now. Pick the single track you believe is the most sync-ready. Not your favorite. Not your best produced. The one most likely to fit under a scene without fighting the picture. By Monday, post in the community: The track title, what type of scene you'd place it in, and one thing that might be holding it back from being submitted today. Let's go! PS...happy friday!

@Tim Jeffcoat I appreciate the feedback. OK, so would I put a low pass filter on the whole track or just the bright melody lines? ¹
