👂🏼Why I still trust my ears over the spectrum analyzer
This week I watched a member lean hard on a visual EQ tool while trying to fix a mix, and it was actually making things harder, not easier. If you don't know what you're looking at, a scary-looking shape on a screen can convince you something's wrong that isn't. Your trained ears, especially if you've played live or stood next to an amp, are more reliable than a graph. I still tell people: listen quiet, listen on multiple speakers, and trust what you hear before you trust what you see. Reply with the tool you lean on most when mixing, and whether you trust it or fight it.

💯Aim for 80%, not 100%
There's a library composer who's been placed 40,000 times. Do the math and it works out to one cue a day, every day, for 15 years. What I see is consistent output aimed at about 80% instead of chasing perfect. Most people can't even tell the difference between someone's 80% and their 95%. If you're stuck polishing one track for a week, you're optimizing for the wrong thing. What's your "aim for 80%" number: how many tracks could you actually finish this month if you stopped chasing perfect?

Well said. I have that 100% problem unfortunately!

My first five
Hi gang, after tonight's session I decided to share some of what I do. Here's what I'm calling my first five. I have about 50 songs in my arsenal. For sync, maybe 35...tops. I'm up to 15 on disco and am shooting for 20 before I start sending...(I will probably begin sooner). The first two songs are my newest. The next one you might have heard when I came into the group. Two more - from this year and 20 years ago respectively. Lastly, a tribute to my mom - featuring bgv's by my brothers, sons, nieces and nephews. And one more with a link to the video - you'll see that it just makes more sense with video. I know it's probably way different from most of yours. Anyway, this is what I do. Basically mushy, cute, sincere or pun-based. https://s.disco.ac/wastttvqgngr https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VXAZ-zpRq58 I'd really like to hear your stuff!

@David Goode very nice!
💬 Quitting is a waste of time, because you always come back
Someone in the Accelerator said this the other day, and it stopped the whole call. They've thrown gear across a room. Walked away from music completely, more than once, convinced they were done. Every single time, they came back. So now, when the self-doubt shows up (and it shows up weekly, for all of us, no exceptions), they remind themselves that even the time they spent frustrated and convinced it was hopeless was still time spent loving the thing. Have you ever quit, even for a week, even quietly in your own head? What brought you back?

I have been playing music for 35 years. I play the guitar and piano and create songs. I write mostly rock songs but some could be considered indie.
