Hi! My name is Treyanna (but everyone who knows me calls me “Trey” for short). Currently I’m in the process of writing a children’s picture book about a girl who is special needs, and children (mainly ages 3 through 8)will be able to learn more about her while understanding inclusion and acceptance at the same time. My sister, Micki, is the inspiration for my book (she’s the main character) and I would like to turn it into a series as well. So far I’ve completed a rough draft, and I need guidance on where to go next. Maybe some editing advise and also tips on where to find good illustrators and publishers. I’m willing to learn more and take in as much as possible! :)

@Zack Bush I want children, especially those who are non-special needs, to be able to understand inclusion and learn how to accept people (like Micki) for who they are. I also want children who are special needs to enjoy this book, knowing that they aren’t alone and that Micki can be their friend too because she’s just like them. I want the child reader to know that a special child like Micki is loving, joyful, fun, etc., even if they can’t do some normal things. Most non-special needs children stop and stare at special children out of curiosity, and some may be nervous and not know what to say to them.. but I want the curious child to understand that it’s ok to ask questions if they see someone who is special like Micki and they don’t have to be afraid. I want them to keep in mind that questions don’t hurt - ignorance does!
What stage is your book actually in right now?
One thing I’ve noticed with almost every writer (myself included) is that we often think we’re stuck… when we’re really just unclear about where we are. So let’s ground this 👇 Reply with the number that best fits you right now: 1️⃣ Idea in my head, not written yet 2️⃣ First draft in progress 3️⃣ First draft finished but something feels “off” 4️⃣ Revised + polished, unsure what’s next 5️⃣ Published but not reaching readers 6️⃣ Something else (tell us) No fixing. No pressure. Just clarity. I’ll reply with one focused suggestion for each of you based on where you are.
