Conté Portrait on Toned Paper
I tried a watercolor wash as the base for this drawing. It seemed to give good tooth and allow for some great layering opportunities. Approx 18x22”

@Herbert van Willenswaard thanks! I’ll look up his work. that makes sense to me. Gouache is basically watercolor with whiting added to the pigment load.

Hi all, I’m Trevor. I’m a painter and draftsman teaching drawing foundations at Colorado College. I’m a project of working one on one with Eric Bransby, Vincent Desiderio and Scott Noel. I use observation and figuration as the core to my teaching philosophy and artwork. I’m excited to connect with the community and find opportunities for convergence.
Oil painting tip!
If you've been painting for a bit and know you're going to be painting again in a day or two, you don't have to clean your brushes every day. Give them a dip in oil - I use walnut - and don't wipe them dry. Leave them in a tray like this paint roller tray from Home Depot I've got here, with the bristles angled down just enough that the oil won't run down and collect in the ferrule. That'll keep them wet for awhile, at *least* a day or two, without needing to be scrubbed every time! If you need to buy yourself even more time, a few drops of clove oil mixed in with your dip will keep them wet a *very* long time, but wipe them out extra well before you paint again!

This is what Rembrandt would have done with his brushes (minus the clove oil). Painting with oil, minimizing solvents, and moving away from synthetic driers makes the process much simpler. It begins to break down the “rules of oil painting” that the 20th century built on speculations about the past.

The color and form on the red background piece is really solid. A palette knife is a great tool for applying and scraping edges to give color and form simultaneously. Peter van dyke and Scott Noel are great examples of this. As long as you are consistent with the directionality of the light, then it opens up a lot of doors for color and temperature.
