Potatoes
Has anyone ever grown potatoes in straw?

I've done it in Germany and it had very mixed results. You get a lot lower yields than a regular planting because you don't get any nutrients from the soil (due to lack there of). That being said, if you can keep them damp it is surprising how well they grow.
In the ground they go!
Frost has now finally been determined to be next years problem so in go the plants. Set up my self-mulching beds yesterday with some help from two little gardeners. They were very pleased with their efforts, but I may have been because of the reward of pizza at the end. Only a few rows set up so far (2x strawberries, radishes), but more to come.

@Vanessa Lowe We had that as well 2 weeks ago. Was 21 degrees and sunny, then we had snow the next day. Strange times.
Blackberry Season is in Full Swing!
I harvested 2 lbs 9.6 oz of blackberries this morning, and that wasn't even half of what's out there ready to pick! At the current rate of $0.67/oz for organic blackberries at the store, that makes this a ~ $28 harvest! Woohoo! ๐Ÿ™Œ To celebrate, here are some fun facts about growing blackberries. ๐Ÿ˜Š ๐—ง๐—ต๐—ฒ๐˜† ๐—น๐—ผ๐˜ƒ๐—ฒ ๐˜€๐—น๐—ถ๐—ด๐—ต๐˜๐—น๐˜† ๐—ฎ๐—ฐ๐—ถ๐—ฑ๐—ถ๐—ฐ ๐˜€๐—ผ๐—ถ๐—น: A pH of 6.0โ€“6.5 is their sweet spot, the same range as blueberries and strawberries. ๐—ง๐—ต๐—ฒ๐˜† ๐—ป๐—ฒ๐—ฒ๐—ฑ ๐—ณ๐˜‚๐—น๐—น ๐˜€๐˜‚๐—ป: Less sun = fewer berries. They want at least 6โ€“8 hours a day. So you plant, wait a year, then harvest. - Primocane (everbearing) varieties fruit in their very first season AND again the following year, giving you two crops from one plant. ๐—ฃ๐—ฟ๐˜‚๐—ป๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด = ๐—บ๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ ๐—ฏ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐—ฒ๐˜€: It feels counterintuitive, but pruning canes during the growing season encourages branching, which means more fruiting sites. Don't skip it! ๐—ž๐—ป๐—ผ๐˜„ ๐˜„๐—ต๐—ฒ๐—ป ๐˜๐—ผ ๐—ฝ๐—ถ๐—ฐ๐—ธ: - Wait until there's zero red or pink left on the berry, AND it comes off the cane with almost no effort. If you're tugging, it's not ready. - Bonus tip: ripe blackberries lose their glossy shine and look slightly dull. That matte finish = peak sweetness. Pick those! ๐—ง๐—ต๐—ฒ๐˜†'๐—ฟ๐—ฒ ๐—น๐—ผ๐—ป๐—ด-๐—น๐—ถ๐˜ƒ๐—ฒ๐—ฑ: A well-maintained planting can produce for 15+ years. Plant them once and enjoy them for a long, long time. โš ๏ธ ๐—š๐—ถ๐˜ƒ๐—ฒ ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฒ๐—บ ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฒ๐—ถ๐—ฟ ๐—ผ๐˜„๐—ป ๐˜€๐—ฝ๐—ฎ๐—ฐ๐—ฒ ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฑ ๐—ธ๐—ฒ๐—ฒ๐—ฝ ๐—ฎ๐—ป ๐—ฒ๐˜†๐—ฒ ๐—ผ๐—ป ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฒ๐—บ: - Blackberries spread, and they spread fast. New canes will pop up beyond where you planted them, so you want to be able to spot and remove any strays easily. - Keep them away from your main garden beds and annual veggie areas. They will absolutely take over if given the chance. A dedicated spot with clear boundaries is the move! Are you growing blackberries? Thinking about it?

@Megan Webb hmm. That is a good suggestion. Might have to do that.

@Vanessa Lowe wouldnโ€™t have been surprised if there was a blood ritual to get them to the state they are in.
Hi all!
I am new here and am excited to learn from like minded individuals such as yourselves ๐Ÿ˜Ž. We just built the garden enclosure (absolutely necessary..DEER๐Ÿ‘€) and it about killed us โ˜ ๏ธ but now we need to learn about what goes in it lol. We put down sticks and leaves and a friend gave us a truck load of year old horse manure (blessing!), and topped it off with soil and our compost that we have from our kitchen scraps. We have cattle fence panels to arch in between the beds to grow climbers on. I have a trellis (not pictured yet) to grow a grape vine on and a couple raised beds for strawberries. Donโ€™t know what weโ€™re doing yet but looking forward to learning. ๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿปโ€๐ŸŒพ

Welcome! I have a constant battle with deers (spotted one this morning), so there is lots of inspiration that is coming from this group.
Finally!
Winter has decided to actually disappear and the frost risk has gone. My seedings have rapidly grown in just a few days and will be ready to move outside in a week or so. Been very jealous of all of the harvests I have seen, but the season is now officially arrived.
Finally!
