How To Make An Effective Practice Routine
I’m currently working on a short practice guide. The idea is to condense the most impactful things I’ve learned about organizing practice over 30+ years of playing and teaching, including working with well over 1,000 private students. It's not about specific exercises, but how to decide: • what to practice • how to divide your time • how to stay consistent even on short days • how to make sure practice actually moves you forward When it’s done, it’ll be a small downloadable PDF priced at $9. Before I finalize it, I want to make sure it addresses the real problems people have. So I’d love to hear from you: What’s the biggest issue you have when trying to organize a practice routine that actually gets results? Be specific. I’ll use your answers directly when finishing the guide.

Great topic! @Jon Bjork -I always have trouble to know on beforehand how much time I have when planning long term; the daily slot might be 30-60min but there will be times when Im able to put in more time from day to day. -As a structured person I tend to over-analyze schedule making, wanting to divide my time into way to many subjects. I also want to measure progress in numbers short term, rather than seeing the big picture and focus on long term progress. -I tend to struggle with knowing when to stick to a thing or move on to the next one. That could include a exercise, a tune, a technical subject in general...
🎯 New Challenge: Yngwie’s “Magic Mirror” Interlude 🎯
This is the one you voted for — the epic interlude right before the solo in Yngwie Malmsteen’s “Magic Mirror.” (we'll do the bendy one next week) But here’s the deal:I’m not giving you tabs. Why? Because most of you will get the fingerings wrong, struggle more than necessary, and build bad habits in the process. Instead, watch the video lesson. I break down everything — exact fingerings, phrasing nuances, and key practice advice that’ll save you hours of frustration (and help you in other areas too). 💡 You can change the fingerings I suggest — but they’re not random. I chose them for a reason. So learn the logic before you improvise. 🎯 The goal? Eventually playing it at the performance tempo of around 150 bpm. But right now? Just aim to play it clean, at your current max tempo. If that’s 60 bpm — that’s still a win. This isn’t about beating anyone else — it’s about getting better than you were yesterday. The whole point of these challenges is to tackle something you wouldn’t have picked on your own… and come out better for it. ⚠️ And hey — do yourself a favor and don’t skip the lesson and then ask why it’s not working. That’s like assembling IKEA furniture without looking at the instructions and then blaming the shelf. 😅 Watch the video. Play smarter. Let’s go.

Hi everyone, Im Tobias, 43 years old from Sweden. My guitar journey is long and unsteady; I started at 16, learning by myself. From then until now Ive had lessons periodically, but also several breaks of multible years. I guess that I qualify as the typical middle-aged intermediate player, unsatisfied about my level of playing concidered how long Ive been playing. Always chasing the next shiny object, never getting the progress that I want. Now is the time to make a change and I hope that Im at the right place. My primary focus is my technique, especially alternate picking. My influences are a lot of the usual suspects; Petrucci, Yngwie, Jason Becker, Kee Marcello and so many more. All with exceptional technique and with tunes that I would love to be able to play one day. The next chapter starts today, starting out with Jon´s "Chop builders"-workouts. The goal is to stick with it daily for a long time, giving this style of practicing a true chance. I aim to report and post frequently to keep myself accountable. /Tobias
Get all the Chops Builders Routines – Limited Time
This is a complete collection of focused, proven routines I’ve used with private students to build real technical progress. You’ll get immediate access to four routines: - Alternate Picking - Legato - 3-String Sweeps - 5-String Sweeps And as I create more, I’ll add them to the collection—at no extra cost. Right now, Skool only allows one-time purchases. Once they roll out subscriptions, this will likely shift to a monthly membership. But anyone who joins now keeps access for life. You’ll find it in the Classroom section.

Hi Jon, those routines look great and I look forward getting to work, starting today. Long term my goal is to progress in all of the three areas(alt.picking, legato, sweep picking). How would you recommend me to approach the workouts with about one hour a day set for practicing technique? Mix them up or sticking to each subject? And if so, for how long before swich to the next?
