Sun Hat Workshop is Here!
Hello lovely weavers! The Sun Hat workshop has just gone live, and just in time for the weekend! Woohoo! You can find it in the Classroom. The video sessions will guide you through the techniques you will need to complete your hat. You will need to rely on the instruction manual pretty heavily for sizing and for specific notes as you move through construction. I did my best to create an accurate size guide that will fit a wide range of sizes. Please note this is a guideline, not hard and fast rules as heads and hats can be many different shapes and sizing for this project isn't a precise science. If you run into problems feel free to share them in the Get Help community tab and I will do my best to assist you. Sharing photos of your issues is always super helpful. You can include photos in your question posts if you like. Thank you all for your excitement and patience for this workshop! I'm super excited to be sharing it. A lot of love and mental gymnastics went into making this one. Baskets don't usually have to end up being specific sizes, so it took all my garment construction experience to work out how to communicate creating a good fit😁. Happy weaving!

I’d start it this weekend if I wasn’t taking a 3-day Ikat weaving class! I’m soooo excited to make this hat! I want to make everything!😊

Over Soaking Reed?
Is it possible to over soak reed? If so, what happens? Is the solution to simply let it dry out? Reed swells when it absorbs water, can it get stretched out? What is the longest amount of time that you should soak reed? Does it depend on width or cut? For example, would 1/2" Flat/Oval reed need to soak longer than 1/4" Flat/Flat reed? Curious minds need to know! Thank you.

@Brittany Stanton Thank you for the comprehensive answer. I’ve always wondered about this subject. What an amazing group you’ve created!

@Anesha Knight I’m glad that you liked it. Brittany’s answer was very helpful to me. I hope it helped you, too.
New YT Video - Tobacco Tray
Here's a fun project to use up some of that reed taking over everyone's house! I'll be adding it to the classroom, but in the meantime here's a link to the companion booklet. https://www.textileindie.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Tobacco-Tray-Booklet.pdf

I just finished making a couple of Shaker cheese baskets. I LOVE specialized baskets like the tobacco tray and cheese basket. It reminds me of driving through the Connecticut River Valley on the way to visit my grandmother when I was a little girl. Back then, shade-grown tobacco was a major agricultural product there and I was fascinated by the tobacco drying sheds. I can't wait to make the tobacco tray.

@Jessie Foster Thank you, they're a lot of fun to make.
Book: Contemporary Basketry
I stumbled on this book at my library. It's pure inspiration (no instruction). Some of y'all are dabbling in sculpture baskets and this book has dozens of materials represented. Some of it's pretty crazy - I for one am not planning to weave baskets from pig gut - although those baskets are beautiful. In the back there's a philosophical discussion of basketry as art and short interviews with the included artists. Contemporary Basketry By Carol Eckert and Janet Koplos
