June Challenge - Nothing But Scraps🧺
Happy Monday weavers! Time for a fun challenge. Your mission: Weave a basket using nothing but scrap reed. Dig into that tangle and use what you've got — odd lengths, leftover colors, random bits. Any of these patterns work beautifully with scraps: - Scrappy Basket (especially great for color scraps) - Bread Basket - The Garlic (perfect for round reed scraps) - Hanging Vase Baskets - Tobacco Tray - Candle Lantern Or design your own. There are no rules here — just use what's already lying about, threatening to engulf you like a hydra.😂 When you're done, come back and post a photo. Let's see what you make.

Sun Hat Workshop is Here!
Hello lovely weavers! The Sun Hat workshop has just gone live, and just in time for the weekend! Woohoo! You can find it in the Classroom. The video sessions will guide you through the techniques you will need to complete your hat. You will need to rely on the instruction manual pretty heavily for sizing and for specific notes as you move through construction. I did my best to create an accurate size guide that will fit a wide range of sizes. Please note this is a guideline, not hard and fast rules as heads and hats can be many different shapes and sizing for this project isn't a precise science. If you run into problems feel free to share them in the Get Help community tab and I will do my best to assist you. Sharing photos of your issues is always super helpful. You can include photos in your question posts if you like. Thank you all for your excitement and patience for this workshop! I'm super excited to be sharing it. A lot of love and mental gymnastics went into making this one. Baskets don't usually have to end up being specific sizes, so it took all my garment construction experience to work out how to communicate creating a good fit😁. Happy weaving!

@Anesha Knight Squeal! So cute! (And the hat’s not bad either 😜)
The Adirondack Pack Basket
Putting this here to give me a push to start on my Adirondack pack basket. These aren’t mine, they are pics from a seasoned weaver (Jill Choate). I have her pattern kit for one of these packs in orange, purple and teal. Will keep you posted. I’m nervous.

EDITED: I had a whole big slew of frustrated comments that I have since deleted. Y’all don’t need that stress on a Tuesday. LOL I will see how many YT videos and Skool tutorials I can mine for answers, but I’m at an impasse on how to put the support slats on and lash this one. (THIS PATTERN IS FROM ANOTHER PROVIDER, TO BE CLEAR! Not a complaint against TextileIndie or at any person specifically — the directions were just poorly written for my skill level. A veteran weaver could probably figure this out fairly quickly.) I know the TextileIndie staff is looking at how to grow and improve their business model. One request: Overexplain! LOL I’ve looked at some of your paper patterns, PDFs, and videos and they are very thorough. Thank you! Such a huge help. There’s a plethora of skill levels who are buying crafting product, beginner to veteran. Providers should make instructions clear to each level and err on the side of “going too slowly” (unless a project is labeled as “advanced”, for example). Good gracious. I appreciate hand-holding. I don’t resent it at all. There are also people who prefer not to rely on the internet for research or video. They prefer paper instructions, so they can sit in a quiet place, away from screens and noise, and just create. I, personally, am a visual learner, but if I have clear and deliberate paper instructions, I can usually do just fine. It’s nice not to have to look something up on YouTube, for example (although I know that’s not always possible). I think it’s wise to try and cater to both groups, though. However, just as a personal aside: If I buy a paper pattern, I don’t want to have to buy something extra to finish a project when I was assured that the paper instructions would include everything I needed without additional cost or hassle. That’s just poor business practice. It looks like if I want to finish this project, I’ll have to donate $15 more dollars to buy the video tutorial. Not what I anticipated. (AGAIN: I’M SPEAKING ON A PATTERN I GOT FROM ANOTHER MAKER, NOT TEXTILEINDIE!)

@Kelly Bertoli Thank you! And I agree totally. Love the extra white glove service we get from TextileIndie.
Harvest Basket
Tried my hand at another rib basket. Used a piece of bittersweet vine as the rim, seagrass and 1/4” flat reed for weavers. It was fun to let the basket evolve to what it wanted to be and not try to force a shape.

Love! Very nice! How do you plan to display it? Or is this a gift?
Poll: Natural vs. Dyed?
Do you prefer working with natural or dyed basketry materials? A. Natural all the way for me! B. Dyed - I love color, the more saturated the better. C. A mix, but I prefer more muted, nature-inspired color. D. It depends on the project. Don't pin me down😋 This poll is for fun - but it will also tell us what to focus on, so the more people that chime in, the better. Waffling and paragraphs of explanation are welcome - we love verbal processing around here🤔💬💬💬

Like you had to ask me! 🤣 BBBBBBBB BUT (in all seriousness) D: it depends on the project. There’s a time and place for muted, natural, elegant, quietness that blends in like a lovely sigh. And there’s a time for wildflowers. EDITED TO ADD: Shout out to Beeker’s multiple personalities. 🤣
