Steers: ever experienced washriding?
Had someone on your wash? Been on someone else's wash? How was it? Was it what you expected? And how would you describe it to someone who's never felt it?

@Liisa Reimann haha! A “break” you’re funny!
High Fives to Cory, Nicole, Lesley + Christina!!
We recently launched the Level 2 Steering Course as a beta. Thanks so much to @Cory Graham @Nicole Herlofsky @Lesley Blyth and @Christina Potter for completing all the classroom modules, doing the homework, showing up to the calls, taking the final exam, and giving us SO much incredible feedback. They're now ready to implement their new race steering know-how and get ready for the assessment. While they're doing that, @Joann Fegley and I will be filling the holes they found in our curriculum. Like - how to practice for a 2K turn if you don't have access to a 2K course or turning corridor. How to handle washriding.. either as the boat on the wash or the one dragging another on your wash. How to handle being cut off in a race, or the shenanigans that always occur when steering inexperienced crews at charity races. The rest of you can help us improve it too - what questions do you have about race steering?

Congrats all! Can’t wait to follow in your footsteps someday!
Ch-ch-ch-changes!!!
We originally started this community as a steering hub, but both Joann and I also love coaching paddlers and developing new coaches. So, over the coming months, we will be adding resources in both those realms. And we'd like YOU to help us shape that. So, tell us in the comments what you want the most support or training in! Answer the poll then expand in the comments. Which of these would you like to see us add next?

I did not vote for it, but I will never turn down an opportunity for a critique of my paddling technique (which rhymes btw).
Homework: Inclement weather experiences
What is the scariest weather-related experience you've ever encountered on the water? How would you make sure that you and your crew stay safe in an unexpected, weather-related situation?

Seeing lightning while on the water was pretty scary. If I were steering, I would be proactive by checking in with the sailing center staff who are always watching the radar very closely. I would make sure I had my whistle on me, balers, and would remind my paddlers of what to do in the event of a capsize. If out on the water and the weather unexpectedly turns bad, if not already on, I would direct all paddlers to put on their pfd’s and to make sure they are tightened up/put on correctly. I would steer us immediately to shore.

@Liisa Reimann Good reminder about the section paddling—hadn’t thought of that.

@Cleopatra Sorina Iliescu we have a rec program and it’s a great way to meet people, practice paddling on the other side, and practice steering!
