Sotol on Sotol — Hand Drill
Pretty excited about this one. Got a Sotol on Sotol hand drill coal today! (Dasylirion wheeleri) It’s not the first coal I’ve ever made, but it’s the first one I’ve gotten in quite a number of years, and the first time I’ve captured video proof that I can still do it, which felt really good. Huge credit to our buddy Alex for bringing the freshly harvested Arizona Sotol, coaching me while I was spinning, filming the video evidence, and for the tip of using pine pitch on the hands for grip, which was a total game changer. Also want to give a big thank you to Joe Lau and Phyre Dojo for the knowledge and inspiration behind practicing this skill. We carried the coal into a nest and blew it into flame shortly after (photo included).

I'm very sorry! (Shameless Clickbait!)
I’m very sorry. But, in my last posting about the (ED) EGYPTIAN DRILL & (CD) CRUTCH DRILL WORKSHOP coming up on this SUNDAY MARCH 15th, 2026, I said that along with the first 25 woods listed, that PhyreDojo would have another 25 woods with CHALLENGING Janka Hardnesses between about 1000 to 2000, totaling 50 wood materials available… that’s not true… PhyreDojo HAS THIRTY-EIGHT MORE WOODS, FOR A TOTAL OF SIXTY-THREE WOOD MATERIALS TO TRY! 10 Year Old's "First Coal Ever!"
10 Year Old's "First Coal Ever!" So, ALEX MALECEK who has been a CARETAKER at Tracker, went home to Western Canada for a while and went to some gatherings with a PhyreDojo Phamily PhyreBox. It contains a (TD) Toggle Drill, (PD) Pump Drill, (CD) Crutch Drill & an (ED) Egyptian Drill. The PhyreBox also contains Tools and READY-TO-PHYRE Spindle/HearthBoard sets of different woods and densities for both ease and to be challenged. You can literally hand someone a method and a set and they can have their 1st Coal in less than 5 minutes start to finish. PhyreBoxes also contain "COAL CARDS". Coal Cards are designed to easily document and tell anyone who sees your photo or video what method you used, what woods you used, and when it happened. It even let's say something like "1st COAL EVER!" Here, Alex captured WESLEY, on Tuesday July 1st, 2025 @1353 PST, who got his "First Coal Ever!!", with a (TD) TOGGLE DRILL Method and Spindle/HearthBoard Set of RADIATA PINE (Pinus Radiata).
