Because Mayo and Kyle are Peru-vians... From StarTalk: "This week in the sky... Move over, Stonehenge, there's a new astronomical stone structure in town! (And by "in town," we mean a continent away, but eh, close enough.) At first glance, the Ćspero dig siteālocated on the coast of Peru, about 25 kilometers from the ancient city of Caralāmight seem to be of greater interest to archaeologists than astronomers. However, a team of researchers recently presented a fascinating discovery: the structure at the heart of the site is an ancient observatory! A close examination of its design reveals that it was built to cast shadows which could be used to track the cycles of the sun, moon, and planets. So, were the people of Caral avid astronomy aficionados? Well, yes, but perhaps not in the way you're thinking. Based on previous research into the city, it seems likely that tracking and determining the cycles was central to the city's approach to farming and especially fishing. From changing seasons to changing tides, Caral's economy was dependent on cycles, and being able to align them with those of the cosmos was just another tool in their belt. Too bad we don't have a time machineāI've got a hunch ancient astronomers might appreciate our audience!"
