The Pulse #3: A quiet recap
This week was a quiet one, both in terms of the number of posts you shared and how the week came to a close. Even so, I sat down at my desk this evening and put together a recap of what happened across our circles over the past seven days. Not every week needs to be full of discussions and new ideas. Sometimes, a quiet community is the best sign that everything is working as it should and no one has anything that needs addressing. That's part of the beauty of a community. It doesn't have to be constantly buzzing to have value.

About Me — Daniel Udofa
I’m a Community Operations Manager and Community-Led Growth Strategist with 6+ years of experience building, managing, and growing communities across fintech, Web3, AI, and technology. My experience goes beyond managing chats and posting content. I’ve worked on community growth, engagement strategy, partnerships, events, social media, user feedback, KOL programs, ambassador programs, and community-led initiatives designed to turn members into active users and advocates. At CoinW, I led community and social initiatives across Africa, managing community engagement, trading education, KOL campaigns, AMAs, community calls, ambassador activations, and offline events. I helped grow the Africa X community from approximately 8,000 to 17,700 followers, and organized large-scale community events. I’m currently a Stripe Community Builder and the Founder of Builders Collective Africa, where I bring together developers, founders, creators, professionals, and technology enthusiasts through events, learning initiatives, and community programs. I’ve also organized technology and AI-focused events including Builders Connect and HeyGen Creators Connect. I’m particularly interested in roles where community is connected to business growth, product adoption, user retention, partnerships, and ecosystem development. If you're hiring for a Community Manager, Community Lead, Community Operations, Community Growth, Partnerships, or Developer/Tech Community role, I’d love to connect. 💰 Expected Compensation: $2000 and above (Depending on the complexity and level of responsibility of the position.) 📍 Open to remote and global opportunities. 🔗 LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/daniel-udofa-865778149/

I need help
I've been trying to grow a product based WhatsApp community for almost three months but we are stuck. I've done social media outreach strategy etc. We currently don't have the money to do an ad, I just want to put that in context. So i need suggestions.

@Deborah Njoku: Please, could u share some details about the product as well as the social media outreach you‘ve already done? Maybe AI will help in case of low/no money to move the needle 🤫🙂 Thx! 🤝

@Deborah Njoku: So the USP are the activities inside the WhatsApp-Group, isn't it?
What would you do
What will you do if you love a brand vision and you apply for that role, some how you got rejected because they felt you had no result ot proof of work.

@Deborah Njoku: Thx 4 sharing. What should a "result of proof of work" looked like in this case? 🙄
Why choosing the wrong community platform costs more than money
Bevy acquired CMX in 2019. But did it truly acquire its most valuable asset? The CMX Slack community currently has 8,539 members and appears to be using Slack’s free plan. That creates an interesting problem. Slack’s free plan only makes the most recent 90 days of messages searchable. Content older than one year can eventually be permanently deleted. Years of conversations between thousands of community professionals are therefore either inaccessible or at risk of disappearing. To unlock the complete message history, Bevy would need to upgrade the entire CMX workspace to Slack Pro. Slack Pro currently costs $7.25 per active member per month when billed annually, or $8.75 when billed monthly. If all 8,539 members were active, Bevy could theoretically pay: $742,893 per year with annual billing $896,595 per year with monthly billing Bevy would be responsible for that bill because it operates CMX. However, Slack only charges for active members, generally those who have used the workspace within the last 28 days. The actual cost would therefore depend on how many CMX members are still active. Even with only 3,000 active members, preserving the community’s complete history would cost approximately $261,000 per year. But the bigger cost is not the software bill. It is the loss of collective intelligence. The CMX community has spent years producing conversations, answers, introductions, recommendations, lessons, frameworks, and industry knowledge. When that knowledge lives inside a platform with limited history, it cannot compound. Members repeat questions that have already been answered. New members cannot learn from older discussions. Valuable insights disappear from search. The community continues creating knowledge, but the platform prevents it from becoming a permanent asset. This is not necessarily a criticism of Slack. Slack was primarily built for team communication, not for preserving the long term intelligence of a large professional community.

Great breakdown, @Marco Sebastian! One detail changes the math though: since August 2024, Slack deletes free-plan messages and files older than 12 months on a rolling basis, and Slack says deleted data can’t be restored even after upgrading to a paid plan. So if CMX has been on the free plan since then, paying for Pro wouldn’t unlock the “complete history”. It would unlock roughly the last year. Everything older is likely already gone. That makes the real question less “pay or migrate?” and more “how much is still left to save?” In Bevy’s position I’d export the public channels now, pull the evergreen knowledge (recurring Q&As, frameworks, tool recommendations) into something they own, and keep Slack for live conversation. In my experience, full migrations are where communities lose the most momentum, so a hybrid feels more realistic to me. 🙂🤝
