Day 4 of the 5 Day Challenge-Language
Comment “day 4” on this post to keep up your streak! Use this thread to ask any questions and post your progress video! Hopefully by now you are starting to see two things; How a jazz musician thinks and practises. The benefits of showing up for yourself regularly and practising something new! Today is all about “jazz language” and how we use pre prescribed melodic material inside an improvisation. Enjoy!

It was really fun putting all the little parts together for this one! The real challenge is can I apply these concepts to a different tune… will see if I can post an update video of that later today too if I get a chance!

@Otis Ragen-Andrews This is great! So excited to hear what you come up with for the last exercise!
Day 3 of the 5 Day Challenge-Chord Tone Motifs
Comment “day 3” on this post to keep up your streak! Use this thread to post your progress videos and ask any questions you have about the challenge. Well done for making it to day 3! Today is all about creating small two note motifs from the chord tones and using them to improvise with. It’s an exercise that I think anyone at any level can learn from. Forcing yourself to stay simple can help you find inspiration a lot easier than a blank canvas. Looking forward to your videos!

(I’m using IReal for my track and the chart there has a larger variety of chords than the example in the lesson video, so I was trying to think about it like there were still only those three chords 😂)

Thanks! This time it was easy cause I already had a framework of simplified chords laid out for me, but in other contexts how do you know which chords can be simplified and what chords to assume over them instead?
Day 2 of the 5 Day Challenge - The Major Scale
Comment “Day 2” on this post to keep your streak! Congrats for making it to day 2! Progress starts with consistency. Little and often is the best way to learn anything new! Today is about trial and error with the sounds of the major scale over the A section of “Lady Be Good”. You will be improvising with rhythm and using your ear to see what sounds good to you. Get to the classroom and start the video, show us what you come up with by posting a progress video on this post or use this thread to ask any questions you have about the challenge today. Happy practising!

Day 2! (Pardon the state of my hair, I just showered but this was going to be my only chance to film today 😂) Take away from todays exercise… rhythmic variety is tricky!🤣

I was watching your jazz bowing video course in the classroom section, and I couldn’t quite tell - when you’re playing the ghost notes, are you working solely with finger pressure on the bow, or bow placement as well? It looked like you were possibly moving closer to the bridge on the ghost notes and the wispiness kind of sounded like maybe that was the case…? But I wasn’t sure! I struggle with making my ghost notes actually disappear that much and not just sounding like slightly quieter notes 😂

Additionally, are you only NOT putting downward pressure on the bow for ghost notes, or do you actually pull up on the bow to the point where it’s almost hovering over the strings?
