I’ve watched a lot of Jim Lee’s Twitch streams he published 5-7 years ago or so, and man… the way he throws down ink is wild. I wanted to try that. This Sub-Zero piece was basically me leaning into the chaos and going for it. I used black paint in lieu of ink and a wad of tissue paper to smear and smudge things around, just to see what would happen. Sorta worked! But some parts… yeah, questionable. I loved his inking techniques (you should look his stuff up on YouTube), but I can see it will take some practice (and the right paper and ink combo) to really land it. For the face and mask, I pulled from this random Ryan Ottley Spider-Man panel I found, a villain with these tiny pin dot pupils that just looked awesome and super intense. And the brow… I went full Fist of The North Star super-gnarled “muscular” mega brows! Also referenced Mortal Kombat 11 a bit, pretty sure I used a Scorpion mask for some of that facial and mask structure. Overall, this one was fun, but not easy. I was definitely pushing myself here, trying to figure out what parts of this looser, more chaotic style I can actually bring into my own work going forward. You know when you push yourself, you feel like your brain is growing and you're constantly failing forward, haha Materials were as scrappy af: mostly Dollar Store paper and supplies, tissue for the chaos, and some cheap-ass paint brushes with black paint doing the heavy lifting. Yeah and Microns for some cleanup. It’s messy. But that’s kinda the point. Lemme know what you think. New on Instagram 👉 https://www.instagram.com/visionarystorytelling/
