Nishant Jain, who calls himself the Sneaky Artist, fills little pocket sketchbooks with crowds, train carriages and cafe scenes, mostly with just a Lamy fountain pen. His drawings are so simple and so full of life. In this video he chats with Maria Coryell-Martin from Art Toolkit about how he got started, then draws along live from a couple of photos. Make a cup of something warm and settle in, it's a lovely one for a Sunday. - - - - - 🖋️ 𝗔 𝗳𝗲𝘄 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗮𝗶𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗜 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸 𝘆𝗼𝘂'𝗹𝗹 𝗹𝗼𝘃𝗲 ✏️ He started out making comics with stick figures because he "really didn't know how to draw." He never planned to be an artist, he calls himself one "just out of curiosity." 📖 He draws with a pen he can't erase, on purpose. When a drawing doesn't turn out the way he pictured, "the solution is to turn the page and make another drawing." 💛 "The joy you get from drawing is totally separate from whether it was a good drawing or not." 〰️ He draws people with long, flowing lines, and says "long lines are your handwriting." Whether your line wobbles or bends a little, "nobody else would draw it like you." 🔑 And on giving yourself a go at all: "permission is the golden word." 🚶 If you ever fancy sketching people out and about, he says "crowded places are a gift," because everyone is far too busy with their own day to notice what you're doing. - - - - - 👀 Keep watching for the last drawing, the busy commuter train. He picks one person to start from and gives them the most attention, then lets everyone around them become just a few simple lines. Such a freeing idea for today's daily page. You don't have to give every person the same care, and a handful of lines can be enough to say someone was there.

Robins, wrens, a sleepy little hedgehog, a dormouse tucked up for winter, and more berries than any hedgerow could hold. 🍂 I couldn't help myself. I wrapped across the double spread of my new sketchbook, and the thing that always happens happened again. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗱 𝗳𝗲𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗜 𝗵𝗮𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗲 𝗯𝗿𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗻. It already had something lovely in it, so all I had to do was add to it. A few words, a little doodle, a scrap of something. 👉 𝗡𝗼 𝗯𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗸 𝗽𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗮𝘁 𝗺𝗲. (Those little cut-out birds? Shhh. 🤫) - - - - - - - - - - 🗓️ 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝘂𝗹𝗹 𝘀𝗲𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗽𝗮𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘀 𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗹𝘆 𝗻𝗲𝘅𝘁 𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗸 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗶𝘂𝗺 𝘁𝗶𝗲𝗿. 🎁 I really want you all to try them, so when the set lands I'll be picking one of the six papers to share free with everyone for the first 48 hours.♥️ - - - - - - - - - - 💬 While you wait, tell me: what would you put on a page like this first? I have a little confession. In the middle of the night - when I couldn't sleep, I ordered not one but TWO sets of metallic watercolors, 🤣and now I'm watching the door waiting for them to arrive 😄 I think they will be great for a secret project I've got coming up in the run-up to Christmas. 😍 It started because a couple of you have been sharing work in the daily thread made with these shimmery paints, and I couldn't stop looking at it. The way they catch the light is just gorgeous. Golds, coppers, pearly pinks, those deep peacock blues... they look like little pots of treasure. - - - - - - - - - - - - So I'm really curious to hear from you. ✨ Have you tried metallic paints yet? What was it like the first time you swirled a brush through one? 🖌️ If you haven't, would you give them a go? 🎥 This one just dropped into my YouTube suggestions and I had to share it What Happens When You Stop Trying to Draw Properly? With illustrator Shoo Rayner It's just really lovely. He takes his sketchbook for a walk along the canal and talks about embracing the flaws, and how sketching isn't supposed to be perfect. It's there to help you look at what's around you and maybe jog your memory later. He draws the same swan over and over, puts a dog next to a slice of cake, and draws a coffee cup from two angles at once, and he's completely happy with all of it. He's basically giving you permission for things not to be perfect, and to just enjoy it. 🦢 Well worth 5 minutes of your time. ☕ 💬 Once you've watched it, tell me what stayed with you.
