Rows or roses, bridges and springs?
Some years ago I wrote my book ‘Two Stitch Crochet Art’. It blew my mind just how much you can do by just using these two stitches. So I also started my YouTube channel I call ‘Howtocrochetusingtwostitches 2 stitches’. The two stitch idea grew with the introduction of the Bridges method because When making rows the bridges are made so it is very easy to hook under them using the latch hook. Therefore it is not often necessary to hook into the chains. hooking under bridges can become quite quick to do. In my first book I introduce the idea of ‘picking up stitches’. This was because when you gather stitches on the latch hook it is easy to pull through lots of loops at once. And that is why I began teaching first a chain length and then turn it into a flower by picking up the loops from the chain length. You won’t find this in traditional crochet where the first chain length becomes the foundation row, ready for more rows of traditional stitches. In Freeform Crochet the latch hook is sometimes used to create the BULLION STITCH. This is the third stitch that I teach because it involves winding the yarn around the hook and pulling all the loops off the hook in the same way as the flower. The bullion is such a versatile stitch. It is like a small spring! It is fun to do. It can be made as big as you like. It can have one or two winds or lots of winds around the hook. You don’t need to count them. It adds texture. it can be made curled or straight. The bullion bracelet is a definite hit with kids and mums love the flowers. The bullions can be spaced out or worked one after the other. They can be the same size or different sizes. They can be worked on petals or on or in between bridges. There are lots of possibilities. After learning how to make a flower, I teach how to hook into the petals to begin bigger circles and this is where the fun begins because we can let it turn into a bowl or learn how to keep it flat to make a coaster or make a fun face using sticky gems or buttons.
