Good Morning
Hey everyone 💛 I’ve been a bit quiet the last couple of days between exhaustion, work, dental pain/swelling, and arthritis flaring up, it’s been a rough week. That said, please remember this is your space just as much as mine. Even if I’m not as active for a few days, I encourage you to keep engaging, starting conversations, and supporting each other. The more we interact, the more this community will grow and the more valuable it will be for advice, support, beta reading, and beyond. Thanks for being here, and I hope you all have a great day ahead. 😊

I've been offline a lot too, personal reasons. But also I've started querying my Lit Fic.
ADHD and writing ?????
I don’t know if it’s my ADHD, perimenopause, or just the way my brain works, but I’m a total butterfly when it comes to writing. Right now, I’ve: Started 6 different stories (because ideas just pop in and I have to start!) Finished 2 Book Ones first edited drafts done Finished Part One of another story (edited 3 times now!) and started Part Two And… 3 other WIPs sitting there staring at me The problem? I haven’t focused on just one project, so my brain feels completely muddled. I’m forgetting details, losing track of my own plots, and some days I don’t even know where to start or what to work on. Does anyone else work like this? How do you decide which story gets your focus?

I have, at any given time, 12 novels in progress. I know I have ADHD and I tend to hyperfocus. Some days I can't write an hour and other days I've written 16 hours straight, barely coming up for food and drink. But I try to make it work in my favour, because I get bored so I come up with new ideas, and my journalism training where I was the only reporter in an indie paper and had to juggling multiple stories at once helps too. But the 12 stories help cause I don't get bored. One day I'll write my paranormal romance, the next I'll write my literary fiction. Eventually I get to the end of the first act and the 'winners' make themselves known. Then I will polish my outline and pick away at those... putting them in an Advanced folder. Sometimes I don't feel like doing any of those and I'll go back to the premises I've not plotted yet (cause I don't outline before Act II - waste of time for me). Once I'm in the Advanced folder, I get through to the end of Act II (always cause I've invested too much time). Might take a while cause I still bounce projects. At the end of Act Ii they go into a Finalize folder. Then once the book is finished it goes into an Editing folder, cause I'm done. Anyway hope this helps.
Editing - Don't really know what I am doing!
Good morning! I hope everyone’s weekend is going well. For those who self-edit how do you do it? I’m obviously a novice. On my first edit, I pasted my chapters into ChatGPT one at a time and asked it to look for inconsistencies, which definitely helped, but it’s not perfect. Now I’m on my second round of editing Echoes in the Gears. I have my proof copy, and I’m reading it on paper (which I prefer), highlighting and making notes. So far, I’ve re-edited the first six chapters. Is there a specific way to edit? I have ADHD and serious brain fog, so I forget details really easily even in my own story! Is this normal? Do you all remember everything you’ve written? Do you just read through over and over looking for errors, or do you have a method?

I was a journalist (with a copy editor and an editor-in-chief who taught me much) and the first thing I do is step away from it for at least a month. Seriously step away. Then (if you outline) compare your overall outline to the draft. Did you hit the beats or if you changed it, did it still work for the overall outline. Same with character arcs. Have to hit those. Are there any wasted chapters (ie. too long, meandering, serves no purpose, fails to advance the plot, etc.)? I've thrown out a half a book more than once cause I got off track, which is why I outline now. Leave it a week and come back and look at the characters. Are the voices distinct or do they all sound the same. If I've named a character, they'd better serve a purpose or else don't bother. Did I forget about any of them and just leave them standing in a field? Go back and kill them off or send them home. Leave it again, run a simple spell check. Make sure I've fixed everything I can. Off to my Beta readers. Mine are really good at picking up places I've dropped stuff or figuring out what doesn't make sense cause I haven't conveyed it well enough. Fix that. Leave it at least a week. Line edits. Tighten but don't remove the flavour. Stop using 'because' and assume my readers have a brain (my Betas are good at picking up where I over explain which I do a lot). Instead of saying walked briskly maybe she jogged over. Stuff like that. Print it out. Another reader through with a pen works wonders. Last spell and grammar checked. If there's nothing glaring, good to go. Anyway that's just what works for ME. It's multiple rounds of editing and it does take months, but so did writing it in the first place. Hope this helps!
MUST READ - AND COMMENT READ AND UNDERSTOOD
It’s come to my attention that some members are being approached privately for services. This is not allowed under our rules. If you offer a service, you’re welcome to make a post about it and let people come to you. If someone posts asking for a specific service you provide, you may comment and discuss it openly then decide together how to proceed. This community was never meant to be a marketplace. It’s meant for genuine support, advice, laughter, and learning. Anyone who ignores this rule will be removed without warning. I want this space to grow into one big, happy book family where we help each other succeed. There’s enough opportunity for everyone let’s share the pot, not fight over it.
