Platform for outdoor sauna
Hello, We’re building a platform for an outdoor sauna to sit on and wondering if the joists should be 2X6 or 2X8. Also, can the sauna structure sit directly on the platform or should it be elevated on cement pads? We’ve been reading and learning a lot about building a sauna. Thanks Veeti for the content you have so far.

For our barrel sauna, I used 6" square treated wood for the frame, filled it with crushed rock, tamped it vigorously, let it settle for a month and tamped some more, then built the sauna on it. It's been a solid base now for two years.
Wood treatment
If you have a barrel or cabin sauna. Have you treated the exterior? And with what? I am trying to decide if I should cover the exterior of my cabin sauna with 1.5 inch insulation and LP siding or just stain it every year. I am worried the boards may warp or open up over time. Also a simple 2 x 6 is only rated at about R-5 insulation. Anyone had issues when its 0 deg outside?

My barrel sauna is built with spruce thermowood, The kit manufacturer states that outside stains or sealants are optional, but won't hurt. I sealed the end caps initially but have not done anything else. This type of wood reportedly holds up very well and ours still looks great after a couple years. Down the road, as it ages, I might decide to apply a sealant, now and then, but haven't yet.
Wax or oil.
Getting close to finishing my sauna and I'm looking for some insight on whether or not to use paraffin wax on my bench or one of the oil products available. Or should I just say the hell with it? Seems unnecessary if venting is good or is this another step of soooooooo many with this build?

I have not used any product, be it wax or oil on the inside benches, floor or walls (thermowood). The wood still looks and smells great after two years, with only an occasional wipe down and being sure to use towels. We have a pluggable drain beneath the floor boards if I ever had to clean more aggressively inside but we just haven't needed it. We are only two people who use it, however.
Barrel sauna ventilation
I have a barrel sauna, with a full diameter glass wall behind the electric heater. I have upper and lower ventilation ports on the entry wall, opposite to the heater. Air exchange is ok, but I am wondering if it can be improved further. Based on info here and elsewhere, a low vent port behind the heater would be the final addition, but that's impossible with the glass wall. I am thinking about putting a vent on the floor just to the left of the heater, red spot on the attached pic. I guess it wouldn't do harm, since i will be able to close it if need be. Thoughts?

I don’t have any objective measures, but the three vent system appears to be working nicely. I can feel cooler air flowing in from the lower two vents and hot air flowing out from the upper vent by the door, when I place a hand nearby. The sauna experience itself was excellent today. It’s warm here now, so the true tests will be this coming winter, but i find the sauna enjoyable even in the 25-30° weather we are enjoying this spring! It gets very hot here in summer, gonna try that as well this year.
Barrel Sauna Roofing
What types of roofing solutions have you come up with for Outdoor Barrel Saunas? Are you happy with it or would you try something different now?

@Gabriel Anderson This was a first time experience with roofing, I am a total novice! So far, no issues from ice or snow that I’m aware of and Tulsa has a relatively mild winter, so that helps. If I ever have to redo it, I’ll certainly add a layer of felt. Thanks!

I don’t think so. They came with the kit, but searches reveal they are probably bitumen from a company called Aleko

We built a barrel sauna a couple years ago and love it. Looking forward to sharing and learning from a community of likeminded folks.
