Sync Licensing Question
Hey guys, I got an email saying it is from Spirit Music Group and a song of mine has been selected for a Netflix feature film. I first felt it was a scam however I submitted a brief questionaire which didn't ask any questions I felt could be used to scam me. Tonight I received a contract which looks legit however under one section titled "Administration Fee" it states "to secure and facilitate the guaranteed placement the artist agrees to pay a one-time, upfront, fully refundable administration fee". Is this a common practice? Unfortunately the Spirit Music Group website has no contact submission or I would ask them directly. Thanks in advance for any thoughts on this.

It’s unusual (or at least not standard practice for a reputable publisher to ask an artist to pay just to secure a placement. A legitimate publisher usually offers to shop your music, pitch you for sync, etc., but they don’t typically make you pay a fee upfront just for submitting your song to “be selected” for a feature. If a publishing company is asking you to pay, rather than paying you / offering a royalty split or advance, that’s very unusual, especially for a sync / feature opportunity.
How are you managing the connection of your USB and TB gear?
With everything now being TB or USB how are you all managing the connection for all of this equipment? I want to clean up and streamline my connections but not sure how I will go about it just yet. I have USB for 4 keyboards/sound module, for 8 hard drives, flash drives,, MPC, webcam, charging for my phone, ect. I have Thunderbolt for my UA Apollo, DAC, UA satellite, ect. Point is that I have so many connections that I have to wonder how are other people managing.

@Paul Jones I get that ... You could in theory get one or two or three large TB size drives and partition them. They will show up as seperate drives. Slightly simpler to manage physically (just one cable, one drive to connect). The only caveat would be if one drive fails you lose all the partitions but having a good backup plan eliminates this. I do cloud backups, system clones, and NAS backups all the time.

@Paul Jones without a backup plan data loss is always a risk no matter how many or how few drives you have. I have worked in IT for most of my life so I can tell you from experience that it works when done properly.
Excited to drop this new song ... Presave link below (and thanks if you do!!)

@Jeremy Bitner thanks 😊

@John Rowley Yes it does. I was thinking of the group "The Band" when I did this one. Somehow a B3 seemed to fit the vibe with the acoustic guitar, banjo, mandolin, violin, double bass.

You don’t have to like every genre you mix. But you do have to respect it. If you can’t appreciate what makes it work for its audience, it’ll show in your mix and your reputation.

I'm interested in this ... I play fiddle, guitar, and a little piano. I have two band projects, an acoustic duo called The JR Band and a 4 piece bluegrass, country, americanna group called The JR Band & Friends. Here are some of our past recordings. The singles are probably the best in terms of audio production. https://open.spotify.com/artist/6NSTxIPdJp47o4bKuDz9j4?si=Y5SfZjsGTUy1bgCfPHaWTw
