Last time I didn't join because all my dogs love to play. But then I got Sally from Wales, a Border Collie who never learned to play. She preferred to hide when she saw the toy. However, she has a cat obsession and thanks to the Premack principle (no she didn't get to chase or harm cats) I got a great tugger now. Just today when she became insecure I got her happily tugging and I was so happy for her and proud how it helped her. So I am looking forward to participate in your course Alex. Play... such a fundamental tool in our toolbox!
Happy New Year!
How are you spending New Year’s Eve tonight? Whether you’re out celebrating, working with dogs, training, or keeping it quiet at home—thank you for being part of this community. I want to wish you all a Happy New Year. May 2026 be a year of real progress. All the best, Alex

@Alex Lato My Malinois bitch got me into herding sheep many years ago. You're still working sheep?

@Alex Lato Unfortunately I never liked IGP, tried it a few times. I love bitework but I prefer ring sports. As for herding... you won't believe the outdated training methods you still see, sometimes it's downright horrible. Teaching a dog a new behavior through negative punishment and intimidation, then claiming after 5 reps the dog knows the behavior such as a lie down next to you, in distance etc. I have seen a lot in the bitesport industry but it was never as bad even 20 years ago than what I have witnessed with some herding instructors.
👋 Welcome to the group, you legends
Thanks for jumping in here early – you’re basically the founding members of this community. This space is for all of you who already follow my work and want a place to go a bit deeper together. Please say hi in the comments and share: - Who are you and what dog/dogs you have? - What are you mainly working on right now? - What’s the first thing you’d like to learn here – one topic or problem you want me to cover as soon as possible? Many thanks, Alex

- I am Rachel from Switzerland - I have five Border Collies, 2 "seniors" (11 + 13 yo), a 5 yo actively working sheep, and for the very first (and last) time 2 young dogs 4 + 7 months - Working sheep and maybe agility (the seniors were both competing at FCI A3) - I used to have Malinois and for the first time in my life I am without a Mali. I prefer working them in Mondioring, IGP is so not my thing but in both disciplines there are no good training opportunities in my area, the few good ones unwilling to welcome new handlers. - My 7 month young Border Collie bitch spent her first 5 months in a kennel and has no desire to play with, shuts down, shows learned helplessness. However she plays tug with her younger brother. - Getting my dog to enjoy tugging with, using tugging as a reward. Also looking into heelwork.
