Coquette Etude in full
Today I pieced together the whole of my Coquette etude and learned it properly. Its filled with lots of twists and turns, lots of different harmonic concepts and a few simple Grappelli licks too. I put together something like this each month or thereabouts for my Jazz Violin Practise Club, available for anyone on the VIP package here. Or all of the material we learn in there is broken up and turned into exercises for Premium and VIP members. If you fancy getting a hold of this sort of thing each month, plus full transcriptions of everything, explainers and help along the way of learning everything. Why not try it via the link below. https://www.skool.com/jazzviolin/plans

Hello my name is Rachel and I’m based down in a very rural area of South Somerset, UK. I used to live in and around Dalston, North London for a decade or so and played violin and accordion in a relatively successful indie/alt-folk festival band whilst I was living there. I started lessons on the violin aged 11, Suzuki method trained so I have the ear for memorising. Took a big break from playing completely in my late teens and early twenties whilst I was living abroad and then at uni I wasn’t playing either, got back into my playing after University by going along to various open mics and jams and just joining in with the backing band or practicing improv with whoever was playing there. I play with a kinda ad hoc folk ensemble and one or two gypsy jazz styled swing collectives down here nowadays. I can get ‘stuck’ on soloing so I’m here for more inspo on jazz language, learning lines/licks, and just for general improv improvement. Good to be here!
Have you heard this?
a great example of Grappelli in his sort of “middle point”. I love Grappelli raw energy when he was playing with Django, however his proficiency seemed to ramp up as he got older. His much later recordings whilst are magic In not always a huge fan of, I felt he seemed to overplay often. (I’m not saying so don’t have this issue myself sometimes!) This point in his playing I felt he seemed the perfect balance of the two. He seemed to effortlessly play amazing Melodie’s that darted around the chords in a musical way and his technique was really on point! What do you think?

Tune of the Month-Coquette
This month in the Practise Club we are looking at the tune "Coquette". Check this excerpt of my etude of the month. (Transcription available for Premium and VIP members) We will be looking at little bits of this etude, taking it apart, practising it in different ways and using it to work on our own playing. 🏆Challenge 🏆 Record a video of yourself improvising over this backing track https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lcx7nV9ntaw For the first person to post a version I will create you a personalised exercise and a PDF with some advice on how to use it to further your playing.

@Matt Holborn thanks so much for your comments Matt, much appreciated, and I enjoyed the challenge. Thank you very much grapelli solo you attached above, just realised which bit you’re referring to. (2nd solo in). That’s a really good one and I will endeavour to do by ear (both ears )!
Looking for practise accountability?
My Jazz Violin Practise club is weekly session that assures you get some sort of jazz violin practise done each week. It’s a little like I just turned up at your house each week and made you try an interesting exercise for 40 minutes. Everyone apart from me is on mute and I guide you all through an interesting concept that is designed to help your playing and is easily boiled down into a simple repetitive exercise. If you want to try a free session, give me a message or comment on this post. We are practising tonight at 6pm UK time.
