Alarm Management
Hi everyone, In process industries, alarm management standards like ISA-18.2 and EEMUA-191 are used to avoid alarm floods and missed critical events. In utility-scale solar O&M/asset management, has anyone tried to apply any of these ideas formally? (e.g. an “alarm philosophy” document, alarm KPIs, rationalization workshops, shelving/suppression rules, etc.) What’s one practice that actually helped you reduce noise without missing important events?

@Călin Sas Thanks for jumping in, that's really interesting. I’m especially curious what “good” looks like in Synaptiq’s upgraded alarm system from a user’s point of view. For you, what changed the most after the upgrade? - fewer nuisance alarms? - clearer priorities (what’s truly critical)? - easier handover into tickets/work orders? Even one concrete before/after example would be super helpful for understanding how solar is actually handling alarm management in practice.

@Călin Sas Thanks for clarifying. Yeah, I recalled our discussion about this handover. The incident clustering you describe is exactly the kind of pattern I was curious about: fewer “new alarm = new ticket” cases, more “one evolving incident with full history in view.” If Synaptiq's PM is happy to chime in, I’d be very interested in how she defined an “incident” boundary in practice (time window, device, alarm type, manual merge, etc.) and what she saw in terms of reducing noise for the monitoring team.

@Marian Dor and all, I'm really enjoying the discussion here and thanks for sharing all the angles. I'm coming from the upstream energy and digital world rather than from PV itself, so this is an outsider view. One potential "blue lagoon" I could think of is high-reliability microgrids for mission-critical loads (e.g. mines, islands, cold-chain logistics, data centres, etc). The job isn't really "cheapest kWh" but rather "don't fail and get me off the diesel as much as possible." If a PV + BESS (or any other energy storage) + control providers can own that reliability problem end-to-end & get judged on the uptime, fuel savings, and risk reduction, the comparison set changes completely. You're no longer being compared to the next PV plant, but to diesel + outage or expensive grid upgrades. Curious how this looks from inside the solar industry: do you already see some players leaning to this kind of reliability-as-a-service model, or is the conversation still mostly about $/Wp and PPA price?
Tips for a new Solar O&M Entrepreneur
Hello everyone, glad to be a part of this community. Thank you @Călin Sas for creating this forum. My name is Rohith, and I am excited to share that I’ve just started my own Solar O&M company based in India. I’ve onboarded my first client, who has a ~5MW solar plant at a single location. The plant is currently only undergoing regular cleaning, weeding, and occasional repairs to cables and connectors, but there is no formal Preventive Maintenance (PM), Corrective Maintenance (CM), or PV analytics being done at the moment. In the next week or two, I will be taking over the plant’s O&M responsibilities and am looking to get some advice and insights from the community. I’m in talks with SCADA providers to bring the plant's SCADA system online, and once the data starts flowing, I plan to explore more optimization opportunities. I’ve gone through some best practices guidelines, and I’ve come up with a preliminary schedule for electrical and mechanical checks, but I’m sure there are areas where I could improve and avoid common pitfalls. I would greatly appreciate any guidance or tips on: 1. A highly implemented and efficient daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, half-yearly and annual maintenance activities. 2. Best practices for implementing a PM and CM program for a plant of this size. 3. Recommendations on tools, excel templates or resources for efficient performance monitoring and data analytics once the SCADA system is live. 4. Insights into building a productive O&M process, systems and scaling for future plants. I’m eager to learn and improve my approach, and I’d love to hear from anyone with experience in managing similar plants. Looking forward to hearing your suggestions!

Welcome @Rohith Pulluru and thank you for bringing up this topic. I love how the discussion is going. For my own understanding, I summarize the key points from @Andreas Iliou & @Călin Sas discussion, but please correct me if I'm wrong: - The data exists (iso values, problematic inverters) but the SCADA layer does not surface it clearly so the people responsible for operations literally don’t see the problem. - Alerts exist at OEM layer but reach the SCADA screen hours later, if at all. - Raw data and alarms are available but whether the operator sees them depends on how the platform processes and presents alarms. I'm curious for a 5 MW single-site plant, what’s the simplest way you’ve seen to: - surface iso / leakage issues within minutes, and - tie those alarms to a standard field check (string → MPPT → inverter)?

@David Moser Thanks a lot for sharing! I'm wondering if I understand how to interpret your chart correctly. The chart title is "Current and Projected", but it only shows the bars for 5 categories. Is that the projected automation level by 2030? Do you have the current level of automation (in 2024 or 2025)? Is it confidential to be shared here? Many thanks in advance 🙏

In the asset management & trading, I suppose the subtasks are meter data validation & estimation, PPA billing & tariff engine, settlement reconciliation & revenue assurance, forecastings & nominations, and curtailment/availability claims & evidence packaging. What do you think the top bottleneck is in this value chain?
