Hello Folks! I would love to have a discussion about the role of the nervous system in coaching and behavior or habit change. I am a NeuroSomatic coach that uses applies neurology with my clients to enhance a felt sense of safety and presence in order to lubricate habit change. It is my understanding (and experience) that trauma or prolonged stress can damage the nervous system. The nervous system is the system that turns on/off fight, flight, freeze (aka the Fs). If our habits/behavior are tied to soothing, coping, or avoidance of being triggered, then trying to change those habits/behaviors will feel literally threatening to the nervous system. This explains one major roadblock to change. If you have ever wanted to change a behavior and found yourself unable to stop, or internally fight about letting the behavior go, then the nervous system might be at the root. You must feel not only motivated to change, but also feel safe. Are there any other nervous system nerds here? Anybody else find this interesting?
