Gain Staging My Instruments
I don't make songs with vocals. With that being said. After I do the foundation method (for my kick bass and snare) I bring in my instruments in order of importance. While listening through my headphones 🎧 the mix sounds great. However, when I take the mix out to my car my kick and snare sounds too forward in the mix and my instruments sound too low. Why is this happening?

@Matt Kurz if the guitar was not recorded on its own track, you might need to use a stem separator of some kind. It will separate all the instruments to their own separate tracks and then you can adjust the gain from there.

How Long To Keep The Limiter On?
After we get our foundation set and we apply the limiter to perform the stress test, do we keep the limiter on the entire time we're mixing or is it just for the stress test and then turn it off?

@Rob Mayzes I've got my bass kick and snare sitting in the right place for my foundation. I've added my other instruments in order of importance until they sound perfect to me. But for some reason when I listen to my song in other places, my instruments sound way lower in volume than my kick and snare. What am I doing wrong?

Recording Grammy-winning vocals in a bedroom
Super excited to share something with you today that's a first of it's kind for Mastering.com We're hosting an exclusive 5-day Vocal Production workshop where you'll get to learn the A to Z of recording and mixing vocals from Adele's very own engineer. Introducing Austen Jux-Chandler. Austen won a Grammy for recording Adele on her album, 25. In the attached photos, can see him on stage (second from the left) accepting the Grammy with Adele. But that's just the tip of the iceberg. Austen has also recorded Ed Sheeran, Lady Gaga, A$AP Rocky, SZA, Mark Ronson, and John Legend. He has earned a reputation as one of the top vocal producers in the world. We recently hung out with Austen at Lion Share Studios in LA, where he told us that he prefers to record at his artist's homes, rather than multi-million dollar studios. It helps create a more comfortable environment that improves the performance, he said. That's when I knew we had to do something with Austen, so he could show you step-by-step how he's able to record Grammy-winning vocals in a bedroom. So, starting March 2nd, Austen is going to spend 5-days with students live on Zoom, teaching his entire methodology from session prep to recording, editing, comping, mixing, creative effects, and more. Austen has never opened up his process like this before, so don't miss this chance to learn from one of the best in the industry. How To Get My 808 To Sit Right In My Mix?
I've gained staged my kick and snare at -5 dbfs and 0 VU. When I add my 808 of course the volume spikes past 0 on the VU. When I turn the gain down on my 808 where it sits perfectly at 0 VU If feels weaker and less present. Any suggestions on how to get it to play nice with the rest of my low-end?
Need help with the Foundation First method
Currently I am working on the Final Mix assignment on MP101. I am trying the "Foundation"- method. I watched the instruction video several times and I get my Snare to -5 Db TP en the VU-meter around 0. Then I set the Kick to peak -5 Db TP. As soon as I combine them, my peak occasionally jumps to -2.2 Db TP when there's a fill on the snare (end of the chorus). I cannot seem to get them together at -5 TP. Or should I just focus an that fill? Can this be because of a build-up of frequencies? I tried EQ-ing things, that does not seem to get the job done. Any recommendations/tips? Or should I just wait the the Foundation-method and finish MP101 first? Thanks in advance!

@Chris van der Linden Yeah I think they should teach this technique using different scenarios of Kick and Snare combinations, so we can see how to get the same results no matter what type of song we're creating.

@Anthony Story Yeah When Jake was teaching gain staging was -10db for every instrument. I'm trying to grasp this new concept, but so far it's been a struggle.
