Starting Out Renting Equipment — How Did You Make the Numbers Work?
For those of you who started out renting equipment, did you struggle with this in the beginning? I’m just getting my land clearing business going and currently renting equipment job by job. Right now I’m also relying on the rental company for transportation, which adds enough cost that I really need at least a full day of work to make the numbers work. I’ve had a couple decent leads come in recently, but the jobs were probably only half-day jobs at most. Once I figured in the rental and transportation costs, my price was higher than they were willing to spend. I hate turning down work when I’m trying to get started and build a customer base, but I also don’t want to take jobs just to say I’m busy and end up making little or nothing. Did any of you run into this when you were starting out? Did you focus on finding larger jobs until you could afford your own equipment/transportation, try to stack multiple smaller jobs together, or just accept that some jobs aren’t going to make sense at this stage? Part of me thinks I just haven’t found the right clients/jobs to target yet. Interested to hear how some of you navigated that early stage and what you’d do differently if you were starting over.

@Jeremy Lewis yeah it’s tough. The rental rates are high but for myself I can’t justify the risk of purchasing new/used equipment right now. Where I’m losing so far are these smaller jobs. As mentioned I need to charge my min day rate to make it work for me and that’s just too high of a price for them. I have a lot of interest from area hunters but the problem isn’t price with them as much as it is with timing. They don’t want me on the property with bow season about to start. I’ve gotten a handful of leads for next spring. Trying to shift my focus to different customer set over the next few months.

@Michael MacKrell hunting season in my area ends in January. I wouldn't want to lock in a price until I put boots on the ground and had a clear definition of what the full scope of the project was. I have reminders in my calendar to follow up with them after the holidays for now.
Day 1 in the books on the new land clearing job!
Started off today with some tight ATV trail recovery work to open things back up. Tomorrow, we shift gears and start cutting a brand-new trail from scratch. The dead ash trees are putting up a serious fight and taking a bit longer than expected to get through, but the Bobcat T770 is doing what it does best—chipping away at 'em and getting the job done. 🪵💪 Love the grind of Day 1. Looking forward to making some serious headway tomorrow!

Day 1 in the books on the new land clearing job!
Question about Day rate hours
For those of you using a day rate for some jobs, how do you 'describe' your work in your quotes? Do you state approx how many hours of actual mulching will be happening? Do you say approx 8 to 5 with X number of hours of mulching, or how do you handle that?

Still a rookie at this so take it with a grain of salt…the few quotes I’ve sent out I’ve simply put a scope of work, a final price and a start date that I make sure is concrete. I haven’t had any negative feedback on this method (small sample). I would not suggest putting anything in hours on the quote. Quote to the scope of work. Austin has a good video on this in the free training for “how to quote”.
Job Quote/Strategy Assistance
Hi all..I have my first lead/quote lined up. Local farm cleared a hedgerow and stacked up a good size brush pile. Normally they would burn this but proximity to road and houses they are looking for alternative options. There are 3-4 good size poplar and white ash stacked in the pile (that I can see). Curious if anyone has any experience with a job like this and if there are any recommendations for tackling it. I’m thinking about renting a mid size excavator to help separate the big stuff out of the pile. Figure I can mulch it to the side and then dive into the rest of the pile. Any suggestions would be much appreciated!
